It can biher ie hum- '_d like Michigan was in the Northwestern game, or it can go down fighting and have nothing at all to be ashamed of, like Michig:n did yesterday in the Iowa game. For three periods, two evenly-matce d teams battled on very equal terms on the turf of Michigan Stadium. At the end of the third quarter Iowa led, 21-14. The outcome of the game was very much in doubt at that point. A justifiably-rated Iowa team could not get rolling. Except for two dazzling runs of over 70 yards by flashy Iowa halfbacks, and a Michigan fumble on its own four-yard line, Michigan could very easily have held the lead. Outstanding football teams, however, can be contained for just so long. The Hawkeyes didn't win a game against Michigan in 34 years, but the fourth quarter of yesterday's game made it evident that Iowa was not going to accept another loss this year. With an undefeated record closer to realization, and with the aroma of roses stronger than ever, the Hawkeyes put decisive pressure on the Wol- verines in the final stanza and captured a well-earned victory. There were many thrilling moments in yesterday's contest, but perhaps the most exciting thing to watch was the tricky and slippery running of Iowa's fleet halfbacks. Particularly sparkling were two backs who didn't even start for the visitors. Bob Jeter and Willie Fleming constantly brought the crowd to its feet with their elusive jaunts. For Iowa supporters, the best news about these two men is that they will both be back again next year. Jeter is a junior and Fleming is just a sophomore. Fleming is only 5' 9" and weighs 175 pounds. Before yesterday's game the speedy sophomore was publicized as one of those players from the surrounding area who was wooed into going to Iowa. Fleming is a resident of Detroit. These two halfbacks registered four of the five touchdowns that Iowa scored. Abundant Hawkeye backfield talent was fully evident. Ray Jauch, who is also just a junior, and currently one of the Conference leaders in total yard- age gained, electrified the crowd WILLIE FLEMING early in the second quarter when " , * sparkling he traveled 74 yards for Iowa's second touchdown. No Dejection . .. ICHIGAN'S LOCKER ROOM after the game was not a picture of utter dejection. Certainly the team was not happy about losing another game, putting its record under .500. But the Wolverines put up a whale of a battle. Iowa was rated no lower than the second best team in the country, but this prestige meant little or nothing to Michigan, Oosterbaan was in one corner of the dressing room, en- circled by a large army of reporters. While taking nothing away from the great Iowa victory, he was proud of his team. "We gave them a whale of a battle. Their running attack, which we knew was very good, proved to be too much for us." In another corner of the steam-filled dressing room stood another man who was really no stranger in a Michigan locker room. He had been in this very same room many times before in his career, both as a player and as a' coach. As a player he gained most of his press notices throwing blocks for a teammate named Tom Harmon. He has gained even more prestige, however, as one of the leading coaches in Iowa's history. Forest Evashevski led his Rose Bowl bound Hawkeyes to iWhat the likable coach claimed his most sbtisfying victory. As his team jubilantly carried him off the field on their shoulders, Eva- shevski clutched the game ball to his chest. This was one win he had wanted for a long time. It was his sixth attempt for a victory over his Alma Mater. Many times in the past he had seemingly had the Michi- gan game in his pocket, but the Wolverines sneaked in and stole it away. When Michigan came back from a 14-point deficit to tie yester- day's game, it appeared for a short time that the same fate was in BUSINESS SERVICES IHELLO THERE!
