Antoine Gibus and his revolutionary "Gi- bus" folding opera hat, style-con- scious males have kept an eye open for the newests in hat fash- ions. But the well dressed young col- lege student this year need not worry about shedding last year's conservative trend. Basic hat colors and shapes will remain the same. Brims Narrow For business wear, rthe narrow brim and tapered crown of last winter heads the list for the well .dressed student. The brim has been cut slightly smaller but the popular center crease and "raw edge" remain the same. Usually a "must" for college males, colors range from dark tones to slightly lighter combina- tions of brown and black or olive. The same narrow brim and dented crown hat is also popular for campus sport wear. Leading the list is the Popular Austrian Tyrolean. Textures "ough Strictly for sports and casual wear; the jaunty headpiece has the rough texture with a combina- tion of colors ranging from olive to daik brown. Medallions and feathers give the Tyrolean the European look and can be used to compliment the sporting favorite. Perenially a favorite with the college man is the poplin cap with, of course, a belt : in back. Plain colors in tan and grey match car coats and afford protection from sun and rain at the same time. Caps Return The herringbone cap is back again to safeguard the young gentleman from the wintry blasts and give him' the best in sporting style. Semi-formal functions, such as dinners, dances and weddings re- quire a homburg or snap brim hat. Your choice of colors range from black, dark grey or the popu- lar midnight blue. Choosing the proper hat color has perplexed many an ambitious male but with a few simple rules he can solve this sometimes frus- trating problem. Brown is in order for currency green, brown or cordovan suits, both bluerand gray suits are flat- tered by gray hats. Care Advised Use a soft brush or cloth to clean your. hat, brushing with the nap. When a sudden downpour drenches your stylish hat, push out all creases and turn up the brim. Allow it to dry naturally as many'expensive hats have been ruined by the hurried male with his "quick-dry" techniques. Before you encounter a rough day and perspiration soaks the band, protect it by putting Scotch Tape inside the band to prevent soiling. A flat surface should beused when putting the hat away rather than ruining its shape on a hook or on top of other hats. Subscribe to The Michigan Daily I As has been the case since the introduction of the Ivy suit, evolu- tion, not revolution, is the word in college men's suits for this year. Stressed more strongly this year are dark-tones, especially in wor- sted fabrics. And the new, dis- tinctive filip this year is the matching vest. Worsted is by all odds the most fashionable suit material this year, which should prove a disappoint- ment to those who prefer the "tweedy" look. Tweeds are still acceptable, but a wise suit-buyer should already have a hard-fin- ished suit before choosing another tweed. 'Herringbones First Herringbones are probably the most popular suit pattern this year, but the unpatterned look scores high on hard-finished suits. A comparatively new pattern, the "barleycorn" will very likely see its most popular season. Decorative stripes, both on her- ringbone and plain suits, will not be as popular this year as in recent years, but still add interest. No changes have been made in the cut of this year's suits. Still with us are the traditional three button, straight cut suits with unpleated narrow pants and un- padded shoulders. Some concession has been made to Mid-Western tastes with the addition of a small amount of shoulder padding. Buckles Decline Suit pants should come without the buckle in the back. With a suitcoat, the buckle is not seen, and will wear the suit coat un- necessarily. Buckles already on suits can be removed when alterations are made. Suit pockets will have flaps, but patch pockets will only appear on very few suits, usually "specialty" models. Vests Not New Vests are nothing new, as mid- dle aged Englishmen have worn them for many years. The .big news is that the vests are being taken up and put on by more and more college students, as the popu- larity of the vest moves west. Vests made their first ripple last year, when they were sported by the University avant-guarde Vests are definitely not required wear, but, what ever his opinion of vests, the intelligent suit-buyer would do well to order one with his iext suit. If a vest is looked on with distaste, it can be tucked away in a drawer, to be used only if the dictates of fashion make it necessary. .1 Shades of green have been ac- corded a permanent place on the racks of local men's clothing stores. Once considered just a temporary fashion in men's cloth- ing, the continued popularity of green has established it as the fourth acceptable color for men's suits.r Colors Listed The other three are the standard brown, blue and black. Blue defi- nitely considered more formal this year than any of the other shades. Shades of gray are this year'si most popular colors. A gray suit is the best for all around wear,+ fitting in equally well at formal or informal occasions. The maxim that a grey or blue suit were the only acceptable suit colors for, formal wear, has been disregarded,j either through ignorance or dis- regard of the distinction. Grey,: however, because of its all around] usefulness remains the best choicef for a basic wardrobe. Suit-buyers can take their choice of a numberi of different shades ranging from1 EVOLUTION, NOT REVOLUTION: Men's Suits Stress Dark Tones S TAT E S T R E E T -Daily-Haroid Gassenheimer "HARD FINISHED" LOOK .. predicted to replace the tweedy look A T L I B E R T Y .aYta.. .*. . *.. .'Yr... New Shoe Styles Provide Comfort, Stylish Fashions The men's shoe story on campus this year is much the same as last, with slightly shifted empha- sis to the desert boot and tennis shoes for casual wear. The suede. desert boot, long a favorite, has received added em- phasis this year, now being worn with all casual outfits. Popular colors are buff and grey; but shades ,range from royal blue to ivory. The buckle-in-the-back trend has hit this style in shoes with some success. The tennis shoe is worn for classes and most casual occasions. Style stresses the unclean, with white coloring apparent only' the first few days of wearing. Other classic fayorites for cas- ual wear include the loafer, the tan buck oxford and the saddle oxford in tan buck and black or grey buck and black. For more formal occasions, the plain toe cordovan oxford pre- dominates, with the wing-tip ox - ford a remote second. The ex- tremely low and pointed Italian styles, never campus favorites, have declined almost to non- existence. For the all-around shoe, the plain toe brown cordovan appears to fill most male bills.
