THE MICHIGAN DAILY r, ; OLLEGE ROUNDUP: Cornellians-Remake Town in Midwest DA: Y By NAN MARKEL GARY, Ind.-Remaking Gary's downtown area has become a post-graduate project for eight Cornell University architectural students. The students arrived Thursday for a four-day on-the-spo tstart of their study, which will culmin-. ate in a physical model of what they consider an ideal downtown layout, and a report suggesting ways for actual redevelopments. * * *. CRANFORD, N. J. - Union Junior College, established 25 years ago as part of an emergen- cy program, sees itself as model of the solution to overcrowding in colleges and universities. "We see the junior college play- ing a major role," president Dr. Kenneth C. Mackay said on the occasion of the school's silver an- niversary, "in helping meet this nation's need for additional facil- ities for higher education." * * * CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Har- vard, Princeton and Yale admis- sions officers recently agreed to co-operate on a system= of 'rating prospective applicants. Under the new system, guidance personnel in the secondary schools will be given official standardized ratings to enable them to" advise students on their chances of ac- ceptance. According to a joint statement of the three schools, candidates will be classified A, B or C. Group A will be practically assured of admission, Group B will be "con- sidered to have. a reasonable chance, and Group C students will be advised to apply elsewhere. * *. * EUGENE, Ore. - A plan which will enable freshman student leaders to become more easily ac- quainted with the campus has been approved by the governing student body at the University of Oregon, according, to The Oregon, Daily Emerald. The plan, if set up, will create more leaders who will orient "key frosh to the business of class lead- ership and of advising these lead- ers as they become acquainted with their responsibilities," said The Emerald. Two favorable effects are ex- pected byr the plan. They are: 1) freshman leaders will seek out ad- vice from students faster and more often than from the Admin- istration. 2) The mechanics of planning dances and events will be speeded up because students who understand and have taken. part in the events in former years will be instructing the freshman leaders. s * C NEW YORK, N.Y. - Twenty- three languages. are being taught: at Columbia University in their new language laboratory which provides 2,000 hours of instruction a week to 1,800 students. 11 BUSINESS SERVICES MICHIGAN DAILY People of Distinction purchase CLASSIF IED ADVERTISING CHOICE MEATS LINES 1 DAY 3 DAYS at LNS 1'DY 3DY RALPH'S MARKET (formerly Freeman's) 709 Packard NO 2-3175 "Just two doors from the Blue Front" )J44 JUST ARRIVED!
