STANDARD SERVICE
to a colonialperiod in Boston dde
to political pressure, was present-
ed in its original setting of 18th
century Sweden. The story deals
with "political intrigue following
an attempt to assassinate the
King of Sweden.
'Playboy' Given
the March production- of J.M.
Synge's "Playboy of the Western
World,",called a modern Irish
classic, featured a setting by David
Johnston, '58A&D.
Johnston's set was the only one
to be designed by a student in the
speech department series, accord-
ing to Thomas Skinner, Grad.
The other scenes were designed by
Ralph Duckwall of the speech de-
partment.
Directed by Prof. Bender, the
story deals with a meek young
Irish boy who becomes a village
hero when he announces that he
has just murdered his father with
a hoe.
Suddenly the father appears,
'proving the boy a liar and leads
him away in shame before the
eyes of 'all the townspeople.
"Love's Labor's Lost," believed
to be Shakespeare's first play,
was the highlight of the season.
The production, presented in Ap-
ril, featured many unusual ef-
fects such as transparent cos-
tumes, glass books and cellophane
letters..
An actress from the speech de-
partment played the "queen" and
occupied a special royal box in
the audience. The performance
was dedicated to her with several
actors speaking their lines directly
to -her.
Give Up Women
The farce is the story of the
King of Navarre's decision to
force his lords to give up women
and spend three years in intensive
study.,
When the lords pledge to fol-
low the king's plan, the Princess
of France comes to the court with
several of her ladies in waiting
for an official visit. Comedy en-
sues when the King puts her in
a tent- in the yard 'of the castle,
and the lords attempt various
methods of breaking their oath..
The speech department is plan-
ning to present another annual
playbill this year.
