Emphasize Pass Defense During yesterday's practice, Head Coach Bennie Oosterbaan again emphasized pass defense drills. The reason for this is Navy quarterback Joe Tranchini, who completed 18 of 27 passes against Boston University Saturday for 221 yards and three touchdowns. Turley Relieves With one wave of the hand, Stengel summoned Bob Turley from the Yankee bull pen. Turley, who brought the series back to Milwaukee with Monday's shutout, had to face Franke Torre, . Torre connected with Bob's third pitch and the ball sailed toward short right field with second base- man McDougald in full pursuit. For a split second it seemed it would fall safely for a hit. Me- Dougald had it all the way, as it turned out, gloving the ball for the game-ending out. He plunged for the initial touchdown in Navy's opening victory over William and Mary, then barraged Boston University for 221 passing yards and three TD's last week. The Boston game was one of the finest ever by a Navy quarterback. But it is his boldness that scares Michigan. Groce mentioned a sam- ple of this quality in recalling a high school game which pitted Clariton against its biggest rival: "Our opponent had a high school All America guard, who was all over the field that day. We were in midfield, and one point ahead, when this lineman tackled me from behind twice. Draw Play "So Joe told me to let him get me once more on purpose. Then with 19 yards to go on a fourth down situation, he called a draw play right over the lineman. Our fullback made it! "Tranchini was as calm as could be, but our coach almost died." Another time when Navy's plebes were playing Pittsburgh's fresh- men, Tranchini was getting set to start a play when he was surprised to see a former prep teammate on the Pitt line. He immediately stop- ped calling signals and asked: "Ed, what the heck are you doing out here, all bundled up?" A bedlam of laughter broke out and time had to be called so both teams could calm down. Great Passer But when Tranchini directs Navy's offense, he's all business. He can throw any type of pass-and does so on any down. Last week he threw 27 (and completed 18). The rugged quarterback's hobby is collecting phonograph records. Michigan, however, is more con- cerned with his passing records. Haircutting To please you.! ft Costs No More to have the best!
