K THE MICHIG~AN'DAILY s V na!A WE9DNESDAY, OCTOBER S 58 aJ na3 a v a1. - ... ,.mow Doctors Discover 'Artificial lMrrow' '4 DAI AY CLASS An amber-colored plastic which pours like mollasses will usher in a new age in repair and recon- struction of bones, two Phila- delphia scientists said yesterday in a report to the American Col- lege of Surgeons. Dr. Michael P. Mandarino and Dr. Joseph E. Salvatore, of the. Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital, were certain they had found a polyurethane foam, called Ostamer, a dense, rigid cellular materieI that sets in 20 minutes and permits full weight-bearing in 18 to 24 hours. Becomes Part of Bone Dr. Mandarino said the sub- stance had nothing to do with ad- hesives or cement-type bonding. Instead, he declared, the sponge- like compound becomes an inti- mate part of the bone, holding, bridging, filling or strengthening gaps. He also described the substance as "chemical bone marrow." As the bone is naturally regenerated, the plastic is absorbed and disap- pears. , In the opinion of the two sur- geons, Ostamer is capable of al- most unlimited applications. Describes Progress "This is only the beginning," Dr. Mandarino said. "Four years ago, when we began our work, others said we were trying to do the impossible. Two and one half years ago, they said we were crazy. Now they are willing to admit it is possible." Dr. Salvatore has been detached from- the Army Medical Corps to participate in the research be- cause of the evident application to military medicine. Bones shattered by shellfire can be repaired behind the front lines without delay, with little equip- m'ent such as metal pins and anchors, and with assurance in most cases that shortening of limbs and amputations can be avoided. Needs Little Preparation "The surgeon," Dr. Salvatore said, "needs only to pull off the shelf a bottle of powder, drop some into a beaker with four times its volume of a liquid catalyst- water and alcohol or even water alone-stir it up with a wooden tongue depressor until it froths and pour it into the prepared cavity. In severe head injuries, where parts of the skull must be re- moved, the plastic is poured in and swells to three times its orig- inal volume. It is nontoxic and has no effect on the fibrous membrane forming the outer covering of the brain. Ii DAILY OFFICIAL BULLETIN U g5~WM~ "v~Jw~- -,-.'-..--- (Continued from Page 4) Oceans."
