0. pCTOBER 7,1958 TIE MICHIGAN DAILY l Yankees Smash Braves in Fifth CLASSIFIEDADVERTISING I Milwaukee Still Leads Series, 3-2; To Play Sixth Game Tomorrow By The Associated Press NEW YORK - The New York Yankees knocked their nemesis, Lew Burdette, out of the box yes- terday and crushed the Milwaukee Braves, 7-0, in the crucial fifth game of the World Series. Bob Turley, the Yankee right- handed ace, yielded only five hits 'in taming the Braves and keeping Yankee hopes alive. The Braves now/lead the Yankees 3-2 in games and had they won yesterday they would have taken the World Championship fo the second straight year. Return to Milwaukee Now the two teams must return to Milwaukee for a sixth and possibly a seventh game in the best four-out-of seven series. Today will be an open day and play re- sumes tomorrow. Previous to yesterday Burdette beat the Yankees in four straight series games and had he won he would have set a new series record, The Yankees big inning was in the sixth in whichifseven runs were scored and Burdette was lifted in favor of Juan Pizarro. Bauer Hits Hank Bauer opened the inning with a single through the hole between second and third. Mickey Mantle dropped a single into short left center and Jerry Lumpe was called out trying to bunt on the third strike Yogi Berra doubled into the right field corner, scoring Bauer and sending Mantle to third. Elston Howard was intentionally passed. Moose Skowron followed with a single past the drawn in infield, scoring Mantle and leaving the bases loaded. At this point Burdette went to the showers. He was replaced by Pizarro. Gil McDougald-who had scored the first Yankee run with a homer in the second-got a ground rules double on a bouncing\ball into the visiting bull pen, scoring Berra and Howard. Turley com- pleted the rout by lashing a single to left, scoring Skowron and- Mc- Dougald. Ties Reco4 Berra's double in the sixth put him in a tie with Frankie Frisch of the St. Louis Cardinals for the most hits in series play, 58, and sent him ahead of Babe Ruth for the most total bases in the series, Terra now has 97 as compared to ~6 for Ruth. The game, in contrast to previ- ous games in this series, produced some excellent defensive plays. The most brilliant was made by How- ard who started in left field after Norm Siebern had trouble with fly balls in the sun Sunday. Howard made a running, diving catch of Red Schoendienst's fly in the sixth, after Bruton' had singled, and bounced to his, feet to throw to Bill Skowron who made the tag of Bruton for a double play. Sailing Club Takes Third The Michigan Sailing club placed third Saturday in a six team sailing regatta held at Notre Dame's Eagle Lake. Indiana captured first position with a 71 point total, followed by Wisconsin with 67 and Michigan with 59. Notre Dame, Cincinnati, and Wayne trailed in that order. Those competing for Michigan were Dexter Thede, Judy Eldean, Dick Scheirlberg Michel Heimen- ick and Timmie Schneider. General Telephone Territory The Great Migration is under way-out of crowded metropolitan centers, into the areas General Telephone serves. In suburban and rural America, populations are swell- ing at five times the big city rate. Industry is expanding at three times the national rate. And that's where Gen Tel is installing new phones at the rate of over 15,000 each month. That's where we're meeting the future with invest- ments which-in new construction alone-will run $190 million in 1958. Result: we are the nation's second largest telephone system. America is on the move. And Gen Tel is moving with it -moving upl in l.; +.' I I
