THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRI' University Stanley Quartet Announces Fall Concerts Stanley Quartet members are Gilbert Ross and Gustave Ros- seels, violins; Robert Courte, viola; and Oliver Edel, cello. University concerts will be given Dctober 14 and November 18 at 8:30 p.m. in the Rackham Auditorium. The program on Oc- tober 14 will include "Quartet in D major, Op. 18, No. 3" by Beethoven, "Quartet No. 2" (1956) by Benjamin Lees and "Quartet in G minor, Op. 10" by Debussy. For the program on November 18, the quartet will play "Quartet in G major, Op. 18, No. 2" by Beethoven, "Quartet in F major" by Ravel and "Quartet No..2" (1958) by Leon Kirchner. This year the Quartet by Kirch- ner was commissioned by the Uni- versity and was dedicated to the Stanley Quartet. Civic Theatre O pens S eason With Sellout "Death of a Salesman," Ann Arbor Civic Theatre's opening per- formance, is a sellout, John W. Rae, Civic Theater president an- nounced. Tickets are still available, how- ever, at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre for the 8 p.m. perform- ances of the play for today and tomorrow, Rae pointed out. He also added that Ann Arbor High School will be the scene Monday for tryouts for the forth- coming Civic Theatre Play, "Visit to a Small Planet." Tryouts will start at 8 p.m. at a location in the high school that will be announced later. Band Plans Dixie Tunes At Halftime A Dixie theme will be depicted through formations and dance steps of the University Marching Band as they visit the Michigan State University campus tomorrow at game time. In a pre-game performance, the University band will take the field to salute MSU, followed by a block "M" and the playing of "The Yel- low and the Blue." Fans will then witness a pre- game preview as the band presents "I Got Rhythm." Twelve members of the band will do a dance step along with the band's presentation. During halftime,' "The Saints Come Marching In" will open the show, followed by a formation of a skeleton depicting the next rium- ber, "Dry Bones." The band will then play "Waitin' for the Robert E. Lee" and "Got the Whole World in My Hand" in concert formation. Following this, the fast-stepping band will take on a block forma- tion, playing the song "Swanee." For its final number, the entire marching band will climax the show with a specially arranged dance to "The South Rampart Street Parade." Miekka Wins Borden Award Shirley Miekka, '59Ph, was awarded the Borden Award for maintaining the highest scholas- tic record previous to the senior year, the pharmacy school an- nounced. The award of $300 was award- ed to Miss Miekka by Dean T. D. Rowe of the pharmacy-'school at a special convocation Tuesday. MIiss Miekka's scholastic average was 3.4 last year.
