Columbia bested the British challenger by little less than a mile. Columbia's winning yesterday was a certainty; the only question was how close a race Sceptre could make it. America's Cup Successfully Held by U.S., Columbia Completes Sweep over Sceptre By GUS MILLER Special to the Daily NEWPORT, R.I. - That ugly old cup the pilot schooner picked up back in 1851 will remain for another winter on her table of honor in the New York Yacht Club trophy room. Columbia, America's current gem of the oceans,; yesterday de- feated a well-sailed but outclassed Sceptre for the fourth straight time to keep the mug.> The margin of victory this time was seven minutes, five seconds. Translated into distance, this means Columbia bested the Brit- ish challenger by something less than a mile,' Sceptre's best show- ing yet. After the three previous- con- 'tests, the only questions remain- ing yesterday were how close could Sceptre stay, and why she had done so poorly during the series of races. At the start, Sceptre stayed very close. Commander Graham Mann, Sceptre's skipper, maneuvered brilliantly in the approach to the, starting line, and had Columbia safely "tucked away." It was all ruined, though, for Sceptre was slightly less than a second too. early to the starting line. On the restart Columbia had a lead of 70 yards. On the way to the first buoy of the 24-mile triangular course, Sceptre again gave a lesson on how to sail when behind. As she did yesterday, she forced Colum- bia to sail away from her on op- posite tacks, so any wind shift could be brought to her advan- tage. Both, boats broke equipment on this initial leg. Sceptre fouled the wire that holds her jib, and had to cut it. The winch that held Columbia's jib sheets jammed, which was just what Sceptre hoped would happen when she be- gan' the tacking duel. At the first mark it was Colum- ,bia by five ninutes, 30 seconds; here she put up a new blue-topped spinnaker for the race to the second mark. During this leg Sceptre gaineda on Columbia until she- began to break more equipment. First, the guy on her spinnaker- pole broke ,allowing the pole to slam into the forestay. Then the hard-pulling. s p i n n a k e r sheet snapped against the main boom and broke it. At this, the crew considered dropping out of the race, rather, than have someone hurt by flying pieces. Deciding they could repair it safely, they lashed their spare spinnaker-pole to the boom. Minutes after this repair, the weakened end of the spinnaker- pole in use broke, and the boom repairs had to be undone and re- made to replace the spinnaker-. pole. At the second. mark Columbia enjoyed a lead of eight minutes, 13 seconds (11 miles). Every thing held on Sceptre's dreary rig as she turned the mark. Eight miles later, Columbia crossed the finish line. f England's hope of taking home the America's Cup for the first time in more than a century was thus delayed at least one more year.
