CHANGES IN ORGANISMS:
Waddington Views Biological Law

By GILBERT WINER
"The mechanism of differentia-
tion is one of the major problems
of biology," observed Dr. C. H.
Woldington, Buchanan Professor
of Animal Genetics at the Uni-
versity of Edinburgh yesterday.
"All organisms pass on traits to
their offspring and these off-
spring must differentiate," said
the foremost specialist in the fields
of embryology and genetics who

The manifold alterations which marked.
transform the fertilized egg into
an adult may be expressed by three
general processes: histogenesis is
the change in the chemical con- ENGLISHhi
stitution of various regions of the..hWay
egg.
Regions Become Distinct
Regionalization occurs when
these regions become distinct
enough to manifest traits. Finally,
morphogenesis results in the actual
appearance of bodily shape and
structures.
Prof. Waddington expanded on
the relation of the genes to the
cytoplasm. The cytoplasm may
limit the potentialities of the gene
but the gene, however, determines
the cytoplasm. This interaction
illustrates the cyclical nature of
gene and cytoplasm behavior.
The exact transmission of in-. . .. .
formation from the nucleus to the
cytoplasm is of major concern to
the geneticists, while the return
of certain information from the
cytoplasm back to the nucleus
holds the attention of the em-,
bryoligists.
Differentiation into the final
product is a complex process that
is best handled by specialists from
many fields.
Radioactive Tracers Used
Prof. Waddington concluded his
lecture with a discussion of em-
bryonic induction, the process
whereby one partof the embryo
may stiniulaite another part to
form an organ or structure. He
noted that radioactive tracers are
used to trace the substances re-
sponsible for induction.
The biochemistry of induction
differs between an embryo and an
adult.
