LIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 1958 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Je ents To Name Lund Tiger Coach TO Return To Michigan (Continued from Page 1) Wolveri nes Polish Offense;..'...... Columbia ToneSeptr USC Arrives in Dearborn t] h ra2 Goes After Clincher today series of the season, was unable to be reached for comment. However, he did tell The Daily last spring that he was very in- terested in the jo, if offered to him. "I have been very happy in my 10 years with the Tigers," he said at that time, "but I consider the Michigan job an advancement." Lund's' business connections with the Tigers would be ended, if appointed, he said. However, the big, former outfielder and first baseman was quick to note that his friendly relations with his former players will be long- lasting. His most recent position with the Tigers has been as third base coach. -Daily-Robert ,Kanner ON THE SIDELINES-Jim Byers, Michigan center who is out of action for at least three more weeks while recuperating from a knee operation, gives a few helpful pointers to Gerry Smith, third- string center. Both players were former fullbacks shifted to the pivot position during spring practice. By DICK MINTZ Although the skies threatened rain, the Michigan grid squad managed to polish their offensive attack during a light workout yes- terday in preparation for tomor- row's opener against USC. Employing a single wing, the starting backfield of BobnPtacek at quarter, Fred Julian and Brad Myers at halves and captain John. Herrnstein at fullback worked and ireworked their speedy ground- gaining game. The rugged 215-lb. Herrnstein once again looked like he might be expected to assume the role he played as the smashing sophomore back who shared scoring honors with Terry Barr two years ago. Myers, taking a full part in the practice, showed no signs of the injury that has hobbled him for the past few weeks. The fleet back, lofting several lengthy punts, practically assured the Wolverines exacting proficiency in this de- partment. To Stay at Dearborn The USC team flew into Willow Run at 9:15 p.m. yesterday and made headquarters at the Dear- born Inn. Working out in Dear- beorn today, the Trojans won't be in Ann Arbor until they prepare to suit up for tomorrow's game. Scouts Matt Patanelli and Don Dufek were high in their apprai- sal of the Trojans. '"They were a. spirited, eager team last year," said Patanelli, "but that 1957 club cannot- con- pare with the team we saw Satur- day. They've improved tremen- dously. They have a huge line- that's what wrecked Oregon State -and they're sharp and fast. "Add to that line some fine backs like Willie Wood, Bob Arnett and Rex Johnston, haflbacks, and you've got something. They've also got one of the best tackles you'll see around in Dan Ficca, the big 230-lb. sophomore from Pennsyl- vania," said the two coaches. Both scouts were impressed with Wood at quarter and also with a 175-lb. end. Hillard Hill, who scored the Trojans "second touch- down against State on a 38-yd. pass completion from his quarter- back. LOUIS (P) - Fiery Eddie Stanky, coach of the Cleveland Indians the past two seasons, was given a front office job today with the St. Louis Cardinals a team he once managed. His official title will be "assis- tant on player personnel." Stanky takes over for Scout Joe Mathes who retired recently after 30 years with the Cardinals. The signing of Stanky helped round out the picture of what the brain trust of the Cardinals will be 'like next year. Still to be named, however, is a successor to field manager Fred Hutchinson who was fired last week.
