THE MICHIGAN DAILY REBEL MEET: Three Professors Finish verine Sailors Steal Show Alaskan Problem Study nil Three University professors have recently completed studies of some of the major problems facing the new state of Alaska. Prof. William S. Benninghoff, of the botany department, has worked for seven years as chief of a section of the United States Geological Survey engaged in studies of ter- rain and glacial geology in Alaska. Prof. Benninghoff notes that the state has serious transportation problems. He explains that there are no rail connections with the main part of the continent and no regular ocean passenger boat serv- ice to Alaska. Also, there are only 5,000 miles of roads in the state. Aircraft May Help Airplanes may solve the trans- portation problem, Prof. Benning- hoff ventures. Many Alaskans, he adds, felt that people in conti- nental United States are "living back in the Auto Age." Merrill Field in Anchorage, the third busi- est airfield in the world, has cars parked in an area which resembles one of the United States' biggest parking lots. Seasonal Work Is Problem The key economic problem in Alaska is that the work is largely seasonal, according to Prof. Dow E. Baxter. The timber industry, he believes is ohe area where year- round employment is possible. He notes that it is cheaper to ship pulp to continental United States than it is to ship pulp wood. There are now two pulp plants in Alaska, one at Ketchikan and the other at Sitka. This is a non- seasonal industry which might be expanded. BUDGET TERMS TO STUDENTS !
