THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 195TTHE MICHIGAN DAILY .W-.WA.MMMMW CLASSIFIED AD ERISIG MUSICA MDSEz _____- w .w \r. ww - - - - a- Fn. 1 i A T A \ R. t3l h ', BRITAIN'S SCEPTRE-top, and Columbia of the United States cross the starting line in the second race for America's Cup at Newport, R. L, in which Columbia later routed the British. Both boats are on starboard tack with wind coming from the lower right. For Columbia, it was the second straight win. Columbia Routs Sceptre;" Lead Cup Series, 2-0 Q' By GUS MILLER Special te the Daily NEWPORT, R.I.-The day ended on a poor note for the British, as a light southwesterly breeze helped Columbia sail over and complete the second race for the America Cup. Sceptre also was out, but was 11:42 minutes late in finishing. This was by far the worst defeat handed one boat by another during the summer. Not only is it sad for the British, but many .Americans, who hoped Britian would be- able to lift the Cup are disillusioned and dis- gusted. The races must be con- tinued, though, until one yacht wins four times. British Seek Windj So, Columbia will be out tomor- row to sail the course, while the British will be looking for more wind._ Once during the race there were some interesting .moments. In the most exciting. start yet, Sceptre just missed a moment of glory. She had fallen in on Columbia's stern, going away from the line, just before the start. But in coming back, Columbia slipped away when Sceptre was slow in covering. And for lack of five seconds, Sceptre missed having Columbia dead in her backwind. Tacking to the first bouy, the expected happened. When these two boats go to windward, one of two things. occurs: 1) Either Scep- as Columbia, and Columbia goes tre tries to go as far into the wind faster, or 2) Sceptre tries to go as fast, as Columbia Just eats higher into the breeze. Here, Sceptre seemed to be bet- ter off than in any like situation in previous brushes. With'two off the wind legs to go, Madame Horbulot's spinnakers had yet to fill the horizon. Columbia, 700 yards in the lead at the bouy had put up a borrowed red-topped spinnaker, known as Little Harry, after navigator Harry Sears. Secret Weapon On rounding the second mark, Sceptre was 8:55 minutes behind Columbia, who was going like a race horse under the pull of Little Harry. It was wondered if Sceptre would put up a second mast.. Instead she came out with her latest secret weapon - a light weight jib, designed by J. Colin Ratsey, assistant helmsman and tactician. But it was not enough to save the ship from defeat. ALTERATIONS CONVERT your double-breasted suit to a new single-breasted model. $15. Dietzgen's exclusive Micromatic Adjustment permits perfect alignment of the scales at all times. Simple resetting of one screw does it. The end plates need not be loosened; fit and action of the slide is never disturbed.' Dietzgen's automatic slide tension insures pertect slide action wherever and whenever these rules are used.
