f958 .u.zxa lriTae.~uiavptu u i.L i II NEW DESIGN IN TEST-The Sceptre, Britain's boat in the America's Cup races this week, is shown earlier in the fall. Aboard are David Boy# (left), the designer and Graham Mann, the helms- man. The Sceptre has many new sailing ideas that are being tried for the first time. ceptre Columb ia TryAgan 'To day,' By The Associated Press BALTIMORE - Pitcher Jack Harshman slugged two homers and a double, driving in all his team's runs, and spearheading the Orioles to a 3-2 victory over Washington last night before a crowd of 6,478. On his third time up, with his two homers behind him and the score deadlocked in the seventh inning, Harshman barely missed striking his third homer. His high wallop whizzed by the right field pole, foul by only a couple of feet. He then blasted a Pedro Ramos pitch to the right field corner for a two-bagger, scoring Chuck Oer- tel. CHICAGO -- Righthander Paul Foytack and the Detroit Tigers prevented Chicago from clinching at least a tie for second place in the American League last night by clipping the White Sox, 3-1. Detroit's Harvey Kuenn, bat- tling for the league batting title, was held to one hit in dive of- ficial at bats and saw his average slip one point to .318. BOSTON-Ted Williams, fined and forgiven,/ drove in four runs with a homer, double and single last night as the Boston Red Sox edged New York, 9-8. Pete Runnels, the AL's leading batsman, got a double and single in four trips to move his average up two points to .325. Williams finished 3-for-5 for the night and advanced his mark three points to .317. MILWAUKEE - Ed Bouchee drove in three runs with a homer and a single tonight in last place Philadelphia's 6-5 victory over the National League champion Mil- waukee Braves, who came up with a ninth-inning rally but failed to catch the Phillies. Also contributing to the 10-hit THiladelphia attack wa, the Na- tional League's top hitter, Richie Ashburn, who went two for four and boosted his average to .344. * * *. KANSAS CITY-The Cleveland Indians survived a bad case of first inning jitters last night and battled back to beat the Kansas City Athletics, 7-5, as Randy Jack- son clouted, a three-run game- vinning homer. The A's scored five times in a horrendous first inning as the In- dians aided them with a passed ball and two errors. B GUS MILLER Special to the Daily NEWPORT, R.I.-The two con- tenders for the America's Cup will resume their duel today over the same triangular course they didn't complete Monday. sceptre spent yesterday's rest period high and dry, while Colum- bia went out for a practice sail. Weather predictions today called for more wind than in previous days, so there may be more action than before. After the way Sceptre treated Columbia on Monday's spinnaker, run, it was not surprising to see Columbia testing some of her spin- nakers. The spinnaker is a sail that operates on much the same principle as a parachute, and the British have some never seen or used by Americans. Theirs are made by a French yachtsman-artist and his dress- maker wife on the floor of a French dance hall. They- seem to' have hit upon something good that can. be used successfully in situations that Americans would deem dangerous. On the other side of the fen'ce it turns out that the poorly setting sails used by Sceptre on Saturday and Monday were due to a pre- dicted wind that never material-: ized. One seemingly major rea- sc- for Sceptre's poor early per- formance was the superiority of Columbia's. sails. Another apparent defect in Sceptre's performance: is the in- experience of her crew irn light wind. Unless the boat is kept mov- ing in light air the sails lose their wind'and take forever to regain lost headway. The Americans have been able to do this when the British have not. ILL, Newsweek New Yorker 1 yr. 1 yr. 1 yr. 8 mos. $4.00 $3.50 CARS ---- By CHUCK KOZOLL Milwaukee's "bush l e a g u e rs" have done it again. For the second straight year the National League flag will wave over the Braves' County Stadium as they host the New York Yan- kees in the first two games of the World Series, beginning Oct. 1.. But this year it will be different as the Braves begin the series in home territory with a surprisingly intact pitching staff which boasts a record superior to the New York team. Lew Burdette, who last year suf- focatec the Yankees for 24 score- less innings while winning three games, is the probable Milwaukee starter. In season play the lanky West Virginian has accumulated 19 victories against 10 defeats. All of that added up to a small psychological 'advantage w h i c h outfielder Mickey Mantle began to notice late last month. In re- viewing Milwaukee pitching . he quipped, "Burdette will never win three games this year, even with last year's luck." Braves' manager Fred Haney's retort was, "He won't because he'll never get a chance to win more than two games--we'll probably win the Series in four games." Haney's confidence comes from the knowledge that four starters ard one relief pitcher are avail- able for Milwaukee use. Venerable 'Warren Spahn, sole survivor of the 1948 World' Series team, will be on tap for the second contest. Ready as starters for Haney and Co. also are Bob Rush and Carl Willey, who have filled the gap left by the injured Bob Buhl. Re- liefer Don McMahon and Ernie Johnson, called up from Wichita for the injured Joey Jay, will pro- vide extra mound personnel.
