THE MICHIGAN DAILY NAVY TYPE Oxford4 AMERICA'S CUP FINALS: Time Limitation Halts Columbia-Sceptre Contes C 95 CAMPUS BOOTERY By GUS MILLER Special to the Daily NEWPORT, R.I.-Columbia, the American defender walked away with the first race for the Ameri- can Cup and when time ran out was leading in the second race. However don't discount Sceptre. During both races, especially dur- ing the second, there were mo- ments when she began to shine. Yesterday, the British asked for a day of rest in order to haul their yacht and polish her bottom--the second race will be sailed again tomorrow. Columbia Wins Even though Columbia won the first race, the result must be called inconclusive. The start was in light breezes just strong enough to fill the sails. This is definitely not S. . 304 South State Sceptres weather as she is listed 11,200 pounds heavier than Colum- bia and therefore is much more boat to push through the water. At the start of the windward- leeward of the. course, Columbia was ahead with the wind flowing off her sails into the backside of her opponent. Sceptre soon changed course to the opposite tack in order to clear her wind, but Columbia followed suit. The wind shifted and set Colum- bia out ahead by 100 yards with Sceptre dead in her wind shadow. From here Columbia walked away from Sceptre in the shifting wind and rounded the outer mark seven minutes-40 seconds in the lead. Both crews immediately set spinnakers, Sceptre's being larger and more colorful. A wind shift allowed Sceptre to carry her spin- naker on the opposite side than Columbia and Sceptre began to move. With some expert sail han- dling, she cut what had been a three quarter mile lead to less than 300 yards before the wind died. Light Sail Drill At this point both boats held a session of light sail drill with spinnakers and jibs going up one after the other with each shift in wind. Finally Columbia picked up a breeze while Sceptre was left dead-this new breeze turned what had been a windward - leeward course into a reaching course, far less tricky to sail. From here on, Columbia slowly pulled away and won the race by almost the margin of her original lead. The second race was over a tri- COLUMBIA LEADS-The American ship Columbia (right) takes the lead over the British sloop Sceptre (left) in the first of the America's Cup Races.
