ts~s THE MICHIGAN -DAILY Y ri'd Reserves (This is the third in a series of four articles discussing the person- I nel of the 1958 Michigan football team. This article will evaluate the third and fourth-string groups.) By JIM BENAGH Seek Positions University of Michigan BARRY NEWMAN . . tough In scrimmage You don't have to be a first stringer to fight for a football po- sition at Michigan, as many a hard-foughtbattle on the greens of' Ferry Field for a third team slot will tell you. Everyone wants to earn a let- ter . . . one of the 38 seats on the traveling squad . . . or reserve a chair at the training table. Last year, for example, Michi- gan gave its gridders some 40 let- ters. Thus, even a fourth stringer can win a monogram. Keen Competition To date this fall competition has been keen for these third and fourth elevens-and a sign of rec- ognition from the- coaching staff. Players like halfbacks Jack Zackary, Gary McNitt and Harry Newman, fullbacks Dennis Fitz- gerald and Gene Sisinyak and quarterbacks John Spidel and Jim Sytek are shoo-ins for third-and fourth-team openings. Zackary, a senior tailback, was quite impressive in pass catching during Saturday's scrimmage. He's also a good runner and punter. Good Sophomore Sophomore Newman scored a touchdown in that same scrim- mage and has progressed steadily ever since he entered Michigan. He'll get a stern test from one- time quarterback Dave Brown, who rates an edge as a passer. McNitt's ranking at wingback will depend on current backfield shifts and the progress of reserv- ist John Batsakes. Fitzgerald and Sisinyak areswell in the picture at fullback where Michigan has its best backfield depth. Pound for pound, 180-lb. Fitzgerald is as tough as any man on the varsity squad. The same is true at quarterback where Spidel (third team) and Sy- tek (fourth) are fairly well plant- ed. ,The former is very versatile- needed ingredients of a single wing quarter-while the.latter is a po- tent passer and play caller. Many Linemen Others who will be hard to re- move are linemen Joe Brefeld and Gordie Morrow t the ends, tackle Bill Stine, guards Dave Palomaki and Lee Hall. and center Gerry Smith. All of the above linemen are sophomores in eligibility with the exception of letterman returnee Morrow, a senior. Stine is getting a stiff fight from several other sophomores in a bid for tackle. Willard Hildebrandt, Guy Swanson and Bill Grien lead this group. Jim Gray, a 215-b. veteran re serve, and Mike Dupay, a con- verted center, could help. The lat- ter was regular center for the freshmen two years ago and was red-shirted in 1957. Palomaki Tough Hall and Palomaki are advanc- ing .fast in their first year of var- sity ball. Palomaki, a tough Finn from Ishpeming, Mich., has defi- nitely caught Line Coach Jack Blott's eye for some action this year. Smith hasn't got size preferred for center-he's 5'10" and 185- but the converted fullback is hard to move from linebacker on de- fen se.He is a' sophogore in eli- gibility. All in all, there'll be some hustle -there'll have to be. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ASSOCIATION, Membership open to Students of ALL nationalities, including Americans.
