TE MICHIGAN DAILY FROM HUMBLE BEGINNING: University Medical Center Continues To Grow 11 Introducing University Medical Center, a huge and diverse, yet closely inte- grated complex of medical serv- ices and facilities, is today, one of. the largest and most completely. equipped medical centers in the nation. The Center, which today covers an expanse of 40 acres; and occu- pies eight buildings, is a 50-mil- lion-dollar complex of' hospital services, research projects and educational facilities. The Medical Center, enjoying a national reputation for. size and. efficiency, expanded from veiy humble beginnings in 1869. A large number of new buildings and as- sorted facilities erected in recent years have lept the growth pro- ceeding at a very rapid rate. At its founding in 1869, Univer- sity Hospital was the first univer- sity-owned hospital in the world. The mammoth operation known today began; with the expenditure of $582 to convert a faculty resi- dence. The first hospital had space for only 20 patients; and lacked oper- ating rooms and clinical labora- tories. Today, 'U' Hospital's 1,100 pa- tients are cared for by 3,000 staff members, consume 'most of the 4,500 meals prepared daily in the huge new kitchen, or undergo one of the 38 surgical operations per- formed here every day. Grows Steadily Since its founding in 1869, the medical center has grown slowly but steadily. The Main Hospital was authorized in 1917, completed in 1925, and added two floors in 1929. To help meet the public's grow- ing medical needs with more speed and efficiency, the University opened the Outpatient Building in 1953. This unit, equipped with an emergency suite, laboratories, doc- tors' offices, and modern X-ray equipment, handles' approximately 1,000 patients daily. Research Aided The University's huge and varied research program was given a boost in 1953 with the opening of the Kresge Medical Research Building, which provides facili- ties for a large number of medical research projects. The seventh floor of this building houses the animal operating rooms, where new techniques in cardiac surgery are developed and tried out on dogs. In 1955, to help meet another great need, the Children's Hospi- tal Psychiatric Unit was dedicat- ed. This unit provides care and treatment of up to 75 mentally disturbed children, and supple- ments the older, overtaxed Neuro- psychiatric Institute. A GreatBookstore Psychologist Reaffirms Faith in U.S. Consumer r,, Faith in the American con- sumer's ability and desire to un- derstand the workings of the nation's economy was reaffirmed this month by a University psy- chologist. Prof. George Katona of the psy- chology department said "The damage brought about by the current recession is not irrepar- able because the American con- sumers are overwhelmingly sane." In a speech delivered to the American Psychological Associa- tion noted that American con- sumers do nbt alternate between exuberant optimism and deep de- spair, but rather "think that trees do not grow to heaven when times are good and ... search for good signs when most of the news is unfavorable." Prof. Katona, who is also pro- gram director of the University's Survey Research Center, claimed that "while consumer thinking is not fully logical, and frequent repetition influences consumer choice . . . on the whole, the broad middle-income groups have been found to have a concise and meaningful picture of the work- ings of the economy."
