THE T~f~ AN DAILYV U, Ohio State, Wisconsin Rate as Big Ten Football Pow a By, DICK MINTZ I Crocidile tears are being shed by Big Ten; tions men handling once again public rela- publicity chores at the pigskin training camps. Morning mail received from Michigan State exclaims, "The biggest rebuilding job in recent years faces Michigan State's foot- ball forces. Gone are 22 lettermen, at least a dozen of whom were key figures in three consecutive bril- liant seasons." Little Worry But in the opinion of those who are supposed to know State has about as much to worry about this fall as did the Yankees last spring. Spartan coach Duffy Daugherty' brightens when he talks about Mike Panitch, the latest of the long line of quarterbacks who have beenl groomed under his hands. The stocky, 171-lb. senior, who completed 57% of his passes last year, won't be supported by the' same bevy of ends that were- pres- ent last season. Sam Williams is the only one of the sure-handed standouts to return. Art Johnson, Dean Look and Bob Bercich figure to round out the backfield. They comprised the' second unit which figured so' prominently in breaking up the Michigan as well as Notre Dame games last year. Woody Hayes is sadly accepting condolences for the 50 per cent casualties suffered by his 1957 championship team. From our standpoint it looks as though the only thing the Buck- eyes need fear is their own com- placency. Frank Kremblas, Don Clark, Dick LeBeau and junior juggernaut Bob White make this one of the most feared backfields in collegiate ranks. Badgers Tough Wisconsin, despite. the loss of Danny Lewis, has the makings of a solid championship contender. Nine late-season starters are back, along with 14 other veterans and a handful of promising sopho- mores. With Sid Williams moved from'quarter to halfback, the team will now be directed by Dale Hack- bart. Dave Kocourek, end, and Dave Lamphear, tackle, are also star performers. Purdue, perpetually rebuilding, still has end Tom and tackles Gene Nick Numley. Lack of depth at will plague Illinois.' Franckhauser Selawski and every position Though field- ing an experienctd starting line, the Illini lost both halfbacks and their quarterback through gradua- tion. Minnesota, a big disappointm last year, expects to have just dismal a season this year. Duncan Tops Iowa quarterback Randy D can, one of the best passers in nation, a fleet set of halfbacks several solid fullbacks are the pi of the Hawkeye attack. Iowa coach Forest EvasheN said, "If we can develop a defe which will hold up, we could hi a fine season, because I expect. offense will be versatile and h to stop. But our line problems severe and the depth is not pr ent." Need Experience Indiana is fielding a squad which sophomores outnumber turnees. Coach Phil Dicke though is aiming for a stea experienced line. "All things eve says Dickens, we'll go with perience." As many as seven fir year men could conceivably t starting assignments. Northwestern, another cel dweller, also has half its squ made up of first-year men. A! other rebuilding project will ag anchor the Wildcats. DUFFY DAUGHERTY . . troubles at State?
