l ARY 19 1959' THE MICHIGAN DAILY SPORT-WHYS .... 4dIJoine4 I P. DAILY OFFICIAL BULLETIN (Continued from Page 4) JAILY CLASSIF J D ADS Not Quite . 9 T LOOKS like a NOT QUITE year for Coach Bill Perigo and his Michigan basketball team. With nine games behind them and only five remaining, it would take a miracle for the Wolverines to win the Big Ten title. But the chances for a first division finish, and even the possibility of an outright second place are pretty good. And this would be something new for Perigo in his nine years as "M" cage mentor. A first division finish has been achieved by a Perigo- coached Michigan team only one-in 1957 when Ron Kramer led the "M" hardwood men to a fifth-place tie. That "middle" position is the highest that any of Perigo's teams have climbed . . .until this year. For the first time in three years the Wolverines have remained in the race after starting the year with the same 3-1 r record. In previous years the "M" cagers have always taken quite a fall after the between semesters break. Last year they managed to fall all the way from first to ninth. The story for 1959 isn't over yet, of course, but so far the Wolverines have hacked out a 2-3 record since the break to give them a 5-4 for Big Ten play. Middle of the Pack .. . ACTUIALLY, the 1959 Wolverines have looked pretty much 'like a "middle of the pack" team. With only two exceptions they have beaten the teamse below them in the standings andlost to those above them. The exceptions, of course, were the victory over Purdue and the loss to Northwestern. The split with Iowa seems quite fitting, since the Hawkeyes are also right in the middle of the league. Of course, a look at the Big Ten scores recorded so far points to the fact that there are a lot of "middle of the pack" teams this year . . .eight to be exact. With Michigan State riding abreast their 8-2 reco'd, and Wisconsin choking on their 1-8 mark, the other eight squads are thrown in the middle, drifting between some 6-4's and some 4-6's. To be blunt-the balance in the Big Ten this year is phenomenal. There were a lot of so-called "upsets" during the first few weeks, but since that time sports writers have come to realize that, there is. no such thing this year. Anyone is capable of beating anyone else, and even Wisconsin proved that it isn't all the way out by edging Purdue, one of the "better" teams. This means, naturally, that the battle for the first division is by no means over. Michigan, or any one of the other teams in the "middle of the pack," could easily finish anywhere from second to ninth. A Few Problems... MICHIGAN'S victories haven't come easily, nor have the Wolverines given any easy ones away. The balance of the Big Ten has been evident in every game that the Wolverines have played-and the out- come has usually been caused by which way the breaks went. The Michigan losses, for instance, were often the direct result of some "M" man not playing up to par. With a rugge nucleus of four men, the Wolverines are greatly handicapped when one of them can't perform well. Michigan's early loss against Northwestern was the result of a Wolverine lapse on defense that allowed Willie Jones to score 26 points. At Iowa the Wolverines were still rusty from the semester break, and two of the top four scorers didn't respond with their usual share of the load. Injuries to key players have caused the last two losses. John Tid- well wasn't able to operate well against Indiana, and was still slowed some at Michigan State, although he dropped in 27 points. However, at State the top two Michigan scorers were slightly handicapped, as George Lee collected four early fouls, and M. C. Burton hurt his ankle. On the other hand, some of the Michigan victories have come from breaks that went the other way. Wisconsin was suffering from several key injuries when Michigan visited Madison, Ohio State was minus veteran forward Joe Carlson when it came here, while Iowa - had just lost flashy sophomore guard Ron Zager before dropping last Monday's game.: One Sure ay . . . " ONE THING is certain among the scatterings of guesswork that mark this year's Conference race. IF Michigan wins the remaining five games, they are assured of SECOND place, and have a good chance of a FIRST place tie. Giving the Wolverines those five, they have a 10-4 record for the season. This must be compared to the marks of Michigan State, Purdue and Indiana. The latter clubs both have four losses at present, and each one must face Michigan State. Figuring that "something's got to give," the chances are that either the two challen- gers will be chopped down (which would give Michigan second place alone), or the Spartans will fall (giving Michigan a chance for a first place tie). Unfortunately, Michigan is by no stretch of the imagination as- sured of the next five victories. The opponents -may all be below the Wolverines in the standings, but they are still tough. Look at North- western, this Saturday's opponent-it rests in ninth place, but are still considered by many as the best-balanced team in the Conference. - Then comes Wisconsin, a team with steadily improving sophomores who have given teams lots of trouble in defeat. Ohio State gave the Wolverines a tough fight without Carlson early in the season, and he is back now. Illinois is a team always capable of scoring 100 points. And the season ends with Minnesota, one of the biggest and best- shooting teams in the league. All Michigan has to do is win these five for a top-notch season record, and .a chance at the title. But all it has to do is drop a fair share, and it is way back in the second division for another -year. Take your choice. s ' -.tit FOR RENT ONE BLOCK FROM CAMPUS: House- keeping room.
