two contemporary works to be
performed.
The aim of the program is to
Sdevelop opera throughout the
United States and one of the best
places to promote American opera
is through the public schools, Gil-
lis asserted.
Performances Not Widespread
"I know of many high schools
who have performed some of the
European works, but because of
the difficulties of production, in-
cluding the fact that most of the
European operas were written for
full symphony orchestras which
need large pits, opera has not
spread.
The American opera does 'not
need a full orchestra; the Works
are more adapted to the American
culture in content, and theme and
they are originally written in
English.
"We hope, through this pro-
gram, to train people, especially
those who will go into teaching
so that they can go back to their
respective communities and put
on American operas," Gillis said.
Sees Need for Workshops
Only through workshops like
this can enough people be intro-
duced to opera and its mode of
production and thus present good
shows to the public, he added.
"Opera has not been accepted
by the American people as bands
have been, for instance," Gillis
commented. The only way for
opera to rise in importance is for
people to be exposed to it.
Gillis said he considers Gersh-
win's "Porgy' and Bess" to be
among the finest American operas
written. He added that Menotti

Begins Composition
Gillis is in the process of writ-
ing a new opera entitled "The
Mess at Star Valley Junction,"
dealing with the Old West. He
wrote the libretto first, which he
said is standard procedure. At this
point he attacked the criticism
that words are merely a spring-
board to the music.
"Although in some respects this
is true, a libretto can actually save
an opera, but the greatest music
cannot help an opera if the li-
bretto is poor."
