CROWN By GARY WRIGHT Hinsdale of East Quad won the "A" residence halls softball cham- pionship last night by defeating the "Big Red" of Gomberg, 6-5. It was strictly a come-from-be- hind victory for Hinsdale as Gom- berg had moved ahead, 5-2, at the end of the second inning. Hinsdale tied the score in the last of the I-M Golf The. all-campus individual 1-M Golf Championship will be played today at 1:30: p.m. on the University Course. The 16 qualifiers were chosen from the I-M team tournament two weeks ago, also at the Uni- versity' Course. A score of 83 or lower was needed to qualify for the tour- ney. fourth and punched across a single tally in the bottom half of the sixth to take the championship home to East Quad. } Jim Strathman opened the big sixth for Hinsdale by striking out; but when the "Big Red" catcher dropped the third strike, Strath- man out-legged the throw to first. r Dick McCoy, attempting to sacri- Ace the runner to second, was safe on an error. Wild Pitch Follows A wild pitch followed, and Gom- berg pitcher Gary Joachim inten, tionally walked Bill Bennet to fill the sacks. Lauri Kallic then bounced one back to Joachim who threw to the place forcing Strath- man. The man of the hour was Jerry Kuck, who had previously hit a two-run homer in the first. He singled past the first sacker into right field to score the winning * tally. 'M'W omen Win in Golf Michigan's women proved to be tough customers in golf last Sat- urday as 'they whipped Michigan State and Bowling Green in two separate, matches over the Uni- versity course. The Wolverine 'A' squad, com- posed of just two players, Linda Nordyke and Ellen Orenstein, beat Michigan State 6-0, while the 'B' team walloped Bowling Green, 12-). The meet was divided into 'A' and 'B' divisions because MSU only brought two players while Bowling Green had four. Oppos- ing those. four were Sharon Van Daalen, Ellen Kaufman, Joan Keevil, and Genella Williamson of the host squad. Miss Nordyke shot a 94 for medalist honors in the meet, which was a good score consid- ering the bad weather conditions that the girls played under. Gomberg opened fast in the first inning with three hits and four runs highlighted by Steve Kerho's booming round-tripper. The "Big Reds" added another tally in the second but then were through for the evening as Hinsdale pitcher McCoy proceeded to retire 12 of the last 14 Gomberg batsmen. Hinsdale Stopiped Till Fourth After Kuck's home run in the first, Hinsdale was able to do little until the fourth. The first man up in the fourth grounded out and then Jim Litwin beat out an in- field roller to second. He stole sec- ond base and came home on Strathman's infield single that bounced off the pitcher's glove into left. Bennet .drew a, free pass and Kallio drove one past the. center fielder for three bases to score the tieing runs. Hinsdale almost pulled it out in the fifth. An error and a sacrifice put a man in scoring position. However, Joachim got tough and retired the next two men on easy fly balls. McCoy was the winning pitcher for Hinsdale and Joachim the loser for Gomberg. Despite the loss of the "A" soft- ball championship, the Gomberg "B" team was victorious and won their championship over Cooley, 12-6. Cooley was defending cham- pions in both the "A" and "B" leagues. Gomberg had already clinched first place in the residence halls race. It's loss to Hinsdale did nothing more than to deprive them of another title to add to their collection for the year. Michigan's Thede and Gold- smith won the positions for the Wblverines, completely a highly successful weekend excursion for the Sailing Club. The sailors only hope that they can do as well next week at Ohio State and bring back the Midwest Championship. to Ann Arbor, thus adding to the many laurels which the Sailing Club has won this year. It would also be a feather in the cap of the boys if they could quali- fy for the Pan-American games, giving them a chance to prove themselves internationally. The contest provided an after- noon of diversion for the inmates of the federal correctional institu- tion, in a place where diversion is hard to come by. The Zetes (re- ferred to by the spectators as "civilians") won the game by a 9-5 score. The big blow for the visitors was a last-inning round tripper by Pete Brechemin. In recent years, weekend con- tests such as this have become the social event of the week for the residents of the "Milan Hotel." Under directign of John White- head, recreation director of the prison, the sports program has grown, and a. number of good teams have been developed. A Guard Speaks According to a long-time guard, the present aggregation is just "fair." Collins, Pomeroy Lead In Qualifying for U.S. Open, And to prove that college coaches aren't the only ones with personal problems, he added, "At one time we had a great team. We had a streak-of 10 straight week- end wins. But unfortunately, all the players 'graduated'." Despite this problem, there is never a lack of manpower at Milan because just as many "freshman" come in as "gradu- ates" go out; and the baseball field is the only place where steal- ing is still allowed, even if it's only base stealing. Fans Not All Partisan Surprisingly enough, the fans aren't all partisan. The Zetes found this out when half, of the inmates came to the visiting squad's bench and started rooting for the fraternity team. The reason for this came out later when one inmate yelled, "Get a hit, you civilian. I've got 15 cigarettes bet on you!" As the Ann Arborites walked off the field with the win, the guard on gate duty bade them good-bye and said, "You'd be welcome to stay, but we don't have enough beds." Collins won his first big time tournament victory in March, the $20,000 New Orleans Open. Until then, he had contemplated quit- ting the tough tournament cir- cuit. There were some illustrious failures. Big George Bayer, rated the game's longest hitter, missed at Little Rock as did Fred Haas, Jr., Joe Kirkwood,dJr., Don Bis- plinghoff and Dave Ragan. Bob Sweeny, former British Amateur Champion, and long- hitting Jimmy Thomson missed out at East Williston, N.Y., where Tom Strafaci of Brooklyn set the pace for 16 qualifiers with a score of 71-71-142, over the Deepdale and Wheatley Hills courses. Others to qualify at Little Rock included Al Balding, Canada's perennial professional champion. And they're treated with SCOTCHGARD for water and soil repellency. White tennis shoes 4.95 up STATE ST.
