By JEAN HARTWIG No one in India who wants an education is being denied the priv- ilege, although the colleges and universities are very crowded, Prof. Bisheshwar Presad of the history department of the Univer- ' sity of Delhi, commented yester- day:. There are 33 universities in In- dia, as well as many colleges, he said. They are not sufficient in f F 1. I.r PROF. BISHESHWAR PRESAD ... discusses education the sense that in every institution there is overcrowding and even two shifts in some schools. To answer the great demand for further educational facilities, the government is constructing many new institutions. Total Attendance 14,000f Discussing the University of Delhi, Prof. Presad said the total number of students who attended * women, although they are, also free to attend all other classes. Classes at the university are all conducted in English, which is compulsory for all students in sec- ondary school, he explained. English Important And although he believes Eng- lish will always be important for communication, Prof. Presad ex- pects that , the Indian language may some day be used for classes. "Can you imagine learning to speak English in your early years and then having to take your final examinations in French?" he asked, in order to clarify the prob- lem faced by many Indian stu- dents.; "There is need for a change, but there is, no reason for a hur- ried, irrational, illogical one," he continued. Teaches Indian History Prof. Presad, who teaches mod- ern Indian history, noted the sim- ilarity between the University of Delhi's curriculum and that of the American universities which he has visited. He also comment- ed on the large and well-equipped libraries and laboratories in the United States. Discussing the University's li- brary system, he said it was one of the best he has seen thus far in his tour of American schools. He ranks it third after Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania. Asked if the University of Delhi which is subsidized by the gov- ernment, had budgetary problems, Prof. Presad chuckled. Money Problem Universal "Every university in the. world has trouble with money. There is never enough for any university to develop as much as it wants," he said.
