'l 1959 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PA EURIPIDES' 'BACCHAE': Hathorn Discusses Modern Critics For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone NO 2-4786 from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. Monday through Friday, and Saturday 9:30 'till 11:30 A.M. "The modern critic of the 'Bac- chae' unfortunately fails to sym- pathize with the bloody details Euripides inserted in his play," t visiting Prof. Richmond Y. Ha- thorn of the classical studies de- partment said yesterday. Speaking on "Euripides' 'Bac- chae': the Stranger Within Us," Prof. Hathorn termed modern readers sterile who find the end- ing too excessive. Prof. Hathorn also criticized thorn said, the modern reader no 11 those who label the tragedy a psychological' study, eliminating the mythical and symbolic ele- ments. Many modern readers still bde- lieve in a historical basis for the? Bacchae, Prof. Hathorn asserted. By understanding what the an-E cient Greeks believed, Prof. Ha-; longer sees the god Dionysus out of context in the play. The Greek gods, he stressed, were neither in- dependent beings nor symbols but semi-mortal participants in world- ly undertakings. They were, as much as man, the recipient of emotional forces; which were con- sidered to be external. i 11 I e.+r _. .. .* DAILY OFFICIAL BULLETIN ALTERATIONS "The Clothing Stores' Tailor" Alterations for Men and Women.
