Track Team To Host Revised Western Michigan Tomorrow Evy Gets Top Salary By BILL ZOLLA Coach George Dales leads his improved Western Michigan track squad into Ann Arbor tomorrow night for their dual meet with Michigan at Yost Fieldhouse. Despite the loss of famed dash man, Ira Murchison, who has com- pleted his eligibility, and the mid-year graduation of standout vaulter Jerry Beckner and broad jumper Roger Shepler, the Bron- cos' indoor track team has better balance and greater depth than last year. Moving in to the slot vacated by Shepler is Fletcher Lewis a broad jumper who has surpassed 23 feet. Expected to fill in for Beckner is Tom Segal who should be a point maker in the pole vault. Segal will of course have his work cut out for him as he must com- pete against two of the nation's top vaulters, Eeles Landstrom and Captain Mamon Gibson of Michi- gan. The Bronco strength seems to be situated in the distance events though. Jerry Ashmore, Art Ever- sole, Ron Hopkins and Dave Red- ding will run in the mile and two- mile races and are expected to pile up many points. Wolverine track mentor, Don Canham stated, "They (Western Michigan) could sweep the two-mile event, taking the first three places." ,1 Ashmore, the top two-miler, re- cently ran the event in 9:16.6, the best he has ever done in competi- tion, and he has been steadily im- proving. This can be compared to the Wolverines' best man in the two-mile, Dick Schwartz, who runs the distance in the 9:30's. Eversole has run the mile in 4:12. The Broncos will also be strong in the middle distances with Douglas Wuggazer the top man in the half-mile. Wuggazer teams up with Jerry Bocci and Dave Edgerly to give the Western team a powerful contingent in the 1000- yd. run. Strong Team In the high and low hurdles, the Broncos also show considerable strength. Ed Henley tops the team in both events with Dallas Shoe- smith also giving support. Jack Tomer is the leading Western high jumper having cleared 6'6". Dales has been coaching at Western -Michigan since 1952 where he has brought his teams into national prominence. He at- tended Michigan for his MA de- gree and also for his PhD.
