r, ._..; THE MICHIGAN DAILY DEAN SAWYER: Community Service Aim Unites Institute For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone NO 2-4786 from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. Monday through Friday, and Saturday 9:30 'till 11:30A.M. (EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the last ix a series of articles dealing wicn the Institute for Human Adjustment fj By CHARLES KOZOLL Tying together all units of the Institute for Human Adjustment is the idea of service to both the University and the state commun- ity complemented with research and training. According to Ralph A. Sawyer, Dean of the HoracepA.ARackham School of Graduate Studies who heads the Institute, this concept evolved while the number and kind of services have increased. The value of locating the Insti- tute in the graduate school is that it can draw from all segments of the University community- being a "neutral territory." Much of the work is inter-departmental with faculty and students from psychol- ogy, speech, sociology and educa- tion combining on certain pro- jects. Institute Counsels Counseling help falls under the Institute's jurisdiction largely be- cause there aren't any units on campus equipped to handle this division, Dean Sawyer pointed out. "In the foreseeable future this area may be handled by the Office of the Vice-President for Student Affairs," Dean Sawyer added. Counseling students, he ex- plained, is directly related to the service functionof the Institute. The other connection to the U~ni- versity is through the field train- ing which it provides for pre-pro- fessional students. In a larger aspect the research and training done by both faculty and students directly aids the state community. By translating the results of scholarly research into service to the public at lai'ge, the Institute has strengthened the ties between the University and the people of the state which supports it. Institute Attune to Public Particular work done through the gerontology division with the aged, the speech clinic with people suffering from oral difficulties and the social science research project with community planning prob- lems brings the Institute closer to the general public. Initially, Dean Sawyer com- mented, much of the grant had been directed toward work with the aged, but was expanded to in- clude a wide range of people not able to adjust to certain conditions of society. The problem of juvenile delin- quency prompted much of the effort expended on the social sci- ence research project and the fresh air camp. Because the divisions still have many areas left in their field to explore, Dean Sawyer added, the possibility of enlarging the Insti- tute to include other fields is quite slight.
