THE MICHIGAN DAILY Braves Halt Pirates, 4-3 By The Associated Press Milwaukee 4, Pittsburgh 3 PITTSBURGH-Veteran right- hander Lew Burdette's effective clutch pitching, backed up by three home runs, today propelled the Milwaukee Braves to a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Burdette, a 20-game winner last season, stifled budding Pirate rallies in the seventh and ninth as he started his quest for another big year. He gave up 12 hits but only one walk. Chicago Cubs 6, Los Angeles 1 CHICAGO-Catcher Sammy Tay- lor slammed across four runs, three on a bases-loaded double, to wheel the Chicago Cubs to a 6-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in a tardy National League opener before 12,288 yesterday. Chicago's 23 - year - old Bobby Anderson hurled impressively to capture the Wrigley Field inau- gural. Besides Taylor, two rookies play-, ed an important role in the Cub triumph. Wynn, a 39-year-old right- hander who began his baseball career back in 1937, leads all ac- tive major league pitchers in vic- tories and ranks 22nd among baseball's all-time winners. Wynn was behind almost every batter yesterday, but managed to work his way out of several trouble spots and hung on for the Sox's second victory in two days over the Tigers. Lollar cracked two home runs and Aparicio, Chicago's 150-pound shortstop, hit a tie-breaking blast in the seventh inning. Cleveland 3, Kansas City 2 KANSAS CITY - Cleveland squeezed out a 3-2 victory over Kansas City yesterday on the strength of an 11-hit attack.
