L J 1959' THE MICHIGAN DAILY Vriter Needs Broadcasts Tunes Empathy,' Yates Says By PHILIP SHERMAN When' writing biography the author has to think himself into the other person, Mrs. Elizabeth Yates, nationally-known. author told the Michigan Association of School Librarians, Friday night. Basing her lecture on the writ- ing of her book, "Pebble in a Pool," the biography of Dorothy Canfield /Fisher, Mrs. Yates ex- plained her methods and added insights about Mrs. Fisher herself. Read All Works Mrs. Yates said she told Mrs. r Fisher that she wanted to find her "in her own words" by reading all of her works. Commenting that she had never allowed her biography before, Mrs. Fisher assented. Mrs. Yates said she felt "so very happy" at the great trust given her. 1 The next two years were "sheer ,twork," Mrs. Yates said. She had to read all of Dorothy Canfield Fish- er's novels in addition to all avail- able short stories. Mrs. Fisher her- self supplied great quantities of her private papers. Use Papers It was here, Mrs. Yates said, that she found the real Dorothy Canfield Fisher. In this period, Mrs. Yates trav- eled to see Mrs. Fisher for two days at the end of every month and just talk with her. Mrs. Yates' method in these interviews was to ask general questions which acted as a starter for Mrs. Fisher who reminiscedl at length. Separated Years The result, Mrs. Yates said, was to disentangle the years of her life. Bringing together all of the ma- terial into a book was the next great task, Mrs. Yates said. But after Mrs. Fisher read the first few pages without comment, Mrs. Yates said she was complete- ly relieved, forshe knew that it would be all right.
