L 11, 1959 THE MICHIGAN DAILY 11, 1959 TIlE MICHIGAN DAILY Exhibit Car -Daily-Alan Winder EXPERIMENTAL CAR -- Students can examine the Pontie Strato Streak now on exhibit at the C Union. The low-slung automobile has an eight-cylinder engine, swivel seats and no center post. One student comnieited that it looked like a 1938 Pontiac in many respects. There is another auto- 'motive exhibit in the Union basement, next to the barber shop. New York Job Trains New Planning ,Director Robert M. Leary, Ann Arbor's new planning director, comes to the city from the Port of New York Authority. The 28-year-old Leary has until now been staff assistant to the Port Authority's planning division chief.' As such, his duties have been similar to those he will now assume.3 His 'responsibilities have in- cluded programming, supervision and execution for a staff of 55 persons in a broad planning pro- gram involving land-use analysis, transportation and parking plan- ning, and liaison work with fed- eral, state and local government. Prepared Budget His personal duties included pre- paration and administration of an annual performance 'budget of $1,500,000. He coies to a Planning Depart- ment with lots of work to do. For the seven months since' Ray C. Eastman's retirement from public service in September, 1958, the city has been without the services of a full-time planner. The search was checked for a time by the Jacobs plan which categorizes all- city jobs and as- signs pay limits to each. The City Moonshine! TULSA, Okla. (P)-Oklahoma bootleggers - facing economic obsolescence - are wondering what to do about their liquor inventories. Repeal of prohibition Tuesday figures to make liquor stores a reality by July 1, and bootleg- gers still have plenty of whiskey on hand, the Tulsa World said Tuesday. 'We've got to be able to have it all sold the day the stores open," one bootlegger was quoted as saying. He suggested cutting prices. "Big Mac" McCarthy of Tul- a, who calls himself "king of the bootleggers," was quoted by the World as saying, "I'm glad the state went wet. Fvt been sick of this grind for a long time." Council voted in January to raise the salary allotted to Planning Director. Starting.Saturday Leary will begin here at $9,246 per year. He is scheduled to assume Ann Arbor duties in early May. The new planning director is a graduate of St. Bonaventure Uni- versity, and has two master's de- grees from Cornell University in public administration in city man- agement and in regional planning.' Leary is married. The couple has no children. 'U' Students' Prosecuted By Library Two 'U' students have been prosecuted for violating library regulations against stealing or mutilating books, Prof. Frederick H. Wagman, director of the Uni- versity Library, has reported. A $100 fine and a suspension were given respectively to two wo- men, one for mutilating and the other for attempting to steal li- brary books. This action was tak- en by the Office of Student Af- fairs. The penalties were introduced by the Regents in Sept., 1958 to stop book stealing. Prof. Wagman emphasized that the aim of the Library in the stiff penalty schedule was to warn and not to punish students. He said a very small percentage of the stu- dent body was responsible for such acts. Mrs. Roberta C. Keniston, di- rector of the Undergraduate Li- brary, said that 1,100 books had been stolen from that libraryj alone in the spring semester , of 1958, the only semester for whichj figures are available. She added that the Library was still losing them, as evidenced by the fact that many books which are not charged out cannot be found by the staff after an e x t e n s i v e search. Plan To Show 'Paperbacks' A group of "Ten Dollar Shelves," collections of paperback books costing ten dollars, will be ex- hibited in the Undergraduate Li- brary next week. Held in conjunction with Na- tional Library Week, the show will constain the books suggested by nationally-known scholars writing in the New York Herald Tribune on the selection of an inexpensive paperback collection with which to start a personal library. The Library's theme of the ex- hibition is "We Encourage Compe- tition."
