These three runs along with their other six all came after two were out. On four different occasions Michigan hurlers got the first two Detroit batters only to have the Titans battle back and score. The Wolverines tied the score briefly in the fourth when Dave Brown and Wilbur Franklin matched singles and Jim Dickey was hit by one of Mettie's pitches to fill the bases. John Halstead then smashed a hard grounder that Titan third baseman Tom Condron failed to handle. Brown and Franklin raced home on'the error. Dickey Ties Score Syring followed with a high fly to deep left field and Dickey trot- ted home with the tying run. But Michigan's offensive show- ing on the whole was just a series of misses. The Wolverines had men on base in eight of the 'nine innings but scored only once as their bats turned as cold as the 400 tempera- ture. Board -Vote i Tuesday ... gadget bags and light meters. Franklin Hits Two Franklin, who played his first game in a Michigan uniform, singled his first two times at the plate and scored one of the Michi- gan runs. In addition the speed which he displayed both on the basepaths and in the field, should be a valuable addition to the Wol- verine offense and defense. Yearlings Halstead and Syring each had a single in their home varsity debuts. Barry Marshall, sophomore second baseman, failed to get a hit, but he made the long- est out possible in the park. He blasted a long drive to straight- away center field that Titan out- fielder Dagaunno caught at the 380-ft. mark. McGinn, the fifth soph in the starting lineup, gave up three runs and four hits in his four inning stint. But if it wasn't for a bloop Texas League he might have got- ten away without giving up a run. Brown Stands Out Among the . several returnees from last year's squad, Dave Brown stood out the most. The junior who played third base yesterday and all last season, but may be switched to the outfield,, had two hits in three trips and his hustling play around the hot corner was noticeable. The defeat also spoiled the home debut for the Wolverine's new head coach Don Lund. Yesterday was the first time in 39 years that a Michigan team played at Ferry Field without the direction of re- tired coach Ray Fisher. Obviously disappointed at the conclusion of the game, Lund said, "We still have a lot of work to do. Several of the same mental mis- takes we made in Florida showed up again in today's game." Lund was referring to several fielding and baserunning mental miscues his team made in addition to three regular errors. The Michigan team record now stands at 1-7., But as Lund com- ._ , _' U 5 GIGANTIC SPECIALS:-sold at 1c on the $1.00 Satrdy-- general round-up on all of the above items.- t 3 To Approve J Bowl Pact t 5U GRAND OPENING MONNDAY APRIL 13, 1959 By AL JONES Daily Sports Editor The Board in Control of Inter- collegiate Athletics passed what was in effect an approval of a new Rose Bowl contract yesterday. In its monthly meeting the Board voted to approve the West- ern Conference action to negotiate for a renewal of the bowl agree- ment on similar terms that have prevailed for the past 13 years. The Big Ten's Rose Bowl status has been in question since the Pacific Coast Conference folded after last season. However,- the newly formed Association on the coast has expressed its desire to play the Big Ten, and if other Big Ten schools also approve the pact it will become official. WCHL Delegate Approved The Board also voted to send 'a representative to a meeting of the newly-formed Western Collegiate Hockey League later this month. The group will meet in Minne- apolis April 25-26 to preview terms for the league agreement. Professor Stanley V. Kinyon, faculty representative of the Uni- versity of Minnesota and also president of the six-member hockec league, has called the meeting hoping to come to some agreement between the schools. Michigan's Board previously voted not to join the group under present conditions, but it is thoght that the Wolverines will join if recruiting and scholastic agreements to their liking can be obtained. Kaseberg Resigns The Board also accepted the resignation of Harry Kaseberg as manager of the Michigan golf course. He will take a position in Kalamazoo with a course there. Jack Blott, former football line coach, has been appointed to re- place.Kaseberg as manager of the golf course. Blott will also be man- ager of the "M" ice rink. In other action the Board voted' against two other Western Cdnfer- ence proposals. The first was a recruiting provision to allow one paid visit of a prospective athlete to the campus, and the second was to lower the age limit of aliens from 20 to 19 years of age. The decision on such proposals hinges on the number of schools in the league that vote for or against them. Such tabulation of votes is usually taken at the next Conference meeting when all fac- ulty representatives report how their respective school boards have voted. mented afterward, "We still have fine potential and just may round into shape." Looking at some of the potentially powerful bats that are in the Wolverine lineup, one definitely has to take Lund seri- ously and perhaps by the time the Big Ten season opens two weeks from today they may have finally come to life. THE FIRST OF MANY?-Michigan sophomore Wilbur Franklin slides safely into home under the tag of Detroit's Jack Jacobs in yesterday's home opener. The Titans smothered the Wolverines with a 12-hit attack, 9-3. Franklin scored his first run ever in a Michigan uniform and is pegged as a brilliant prospect. Versatile, he can play- infield, outfield or catch. Your Doctor's Prescriptions Filled FINEST QUALITY MATERIALS Precision Work CAMPUS OPTICIANS Spagnuola Sparkles U.
