THE MICHIGAN DAILY PA For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone NO 2-4784 from 1:00 to 1' JOHN WAIN-British novelist, critic and poet discusses the change in attitude of the "new literary generation." He said people have shifted their attention from relationships involving a lot of people, to those involving afew and this shift das instrumental for the new attitude. Writer Discusses PostWar Novelists By FAITH WEINSTEIN "How would you feel if some- one called you n angry young man?" John Wain asked. "It's a press stunt," he con- tinued, "something drummed up by Fleet Street to make news stories. There is a literary genera- tion today with. something in common, but I don't think that something is anger." Wain, who is a. leading British novelist, critic and poet; went ,on to' describe what he thinks this TAlk Views "something in common" is. The post-war novelists, he explained, "have shifted their attention from relationships involving a lot of people, such as political relation- ships, to those involving a few." This has come about, he added, because the young people who have grown up since the war have come to feel that they are "living in a 'iuge monolithic block where even their own government is just part of an assembly. They feel that there is little they can do to alter the world, and so, concen- trate on the individual." I "It was a mistake on the part of the thirties writers," he said, to think that literature, and particu- larly poetry could be made of the stuff which goes on front pages of newspapers." Discusses 'Movement' Wain went on to discuss "The Movement," which is the common appelatign given to the group of contemporary British novelists and poets of which he is consid- ered a member. "In literary history," he said, "there are always people who have a broad literary, similarity: Jour- nalists, and I mean the respon- sible ones as well as the irrespon- sible, have been waiting for a fifties tone to appear. Because of the general attitude, the post-war identity had a hard 'time emerg- Mg. The first indication was an ar- ticle in the "Spectator" in 1951, called "In the Movement," which picked out Iris Murdoch, Kingsley Amis and myself, and some poets,. such as Peter Gunn, as being part of this "Movement," he continued. Satire Is Characteristic One of the primary characteris- tics of the "'Movement" writers is a satirical: biting view of society and life, according to the English professors who made up last week's symposium on the "Trends in British Literature.", "There has always been a very strong tradition of a certain kind of satire in British literature," Wain said. "Young writers start off with satiric novels, and later on turn to other things, because it is a natural thing for a young person, faced with a world in which he had no say, to follow his first aggressive impulses and at- tack it." "Later," he continued, "he be- gins to feel responsible for it, loses his impulse to score points and wants to do something construc- tive." A new wave of writers often begins with satire and then finds the label "satiric novelists' fitting more and more awkwardly as time goes on, he concluded.
