Monday through Friday, and Saturday 9:30 'ti 11:30 A.M. t SOUTH SEA STATE-Contrasting sharply with Alaskan snows, Hawaii, with its tropical beaches, follows Alaska into the Union. By The Associated Press " Before Dec. 7, 1941, the Ha- vaiian Islands were a never-never land. Or, in Mark Twain's descrip- tion, "the loveliest fleet of islands that lies anchored in any ocean." They were remote, idyllic. But ' there had been battles in Hawaii before: In -1893, Americans and Euro- peans resident there :deposed Queen Lilloukalani in a bloodless revolution made possible by the landing of marines from the United States cruiser Boston. It appeared a natural sequence of Cook's landing. And it led, in natural sequence, to statehood. Petition Congress A provisional government was formed with the express aim of coming under the protection of the American flag (1893). Less than a decade later the first peti- tion was presented to Congress re- questing statehood. At first, it was religion and whaling which brought Americans to Hawaii. The whalers are all but forgotten, but the New Eng- Org anization Notices x B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation, Sab- bath Services Sponsored by Delta Phi Epsilon, Mar. 13, 7:30 p.m., 1429 Hill. They converted the pagan people to Christianity covered up the naked women in Mother Hub- bards (ancestor of today's floor- length muumuu) and fought dis- ease, liquor and moral license in- troduced by seafarers. Acquire Land Through a foothold gained by missionaries and whalers, Ameri- cans acquired land and planted sugar cane. They turned to the Orient, first importing Chinese in 1852, and later, in 1885, bringing in Japan- ese to be followed by Filipinos and Koreans. From the West, but in, smaller numbers, came Portuguese and Puerto Ricans. Sugar, sold mainly to the United States, became king. It was the basis of a tight, feudalistic econ- omy. In the 20th century, pine- apple joined it, though never chal- lenging its supremacy. The easy going Hawaiians could not be kept in the cane fields so the planters began to import workers in a program which gave the islands its present multi-racial population. The native Hawaiians were dis- placed economically, and politi- cally. Their monarchy was over- thrown bloodlessly by Americans who wanted annexation to the United States to sell their sugar tariff-free. And Hawaii began to transform itself into an American commu- nity.
