THE MICHIGAN DAILY THE BIG SPLASH: Designers Choose Swim Styles BROWN REIGNS - Lightweight and brown are the prerequisites for any' man's spring suit. Natural lines stressing the narrow look. are popular." -Daily-David Arnold FOR SUMMER ... ."a sale" Men Switch 'to Shorter Jack ts The problem of men's swimming suit fashions presents a real poser to an, aspiring young designer. Due to the exigencies of the male anatomy, the surface area fo most swimming suits is reli- ably estimated at between two and three square feet. Within this somewhat meager framework, there is only so much that the swimming suit designer can do to vary the styles from one year to another. Fundamentally Protective After all, male swimming suits, unlike some female models, are fundamentally designed as a pro- tective apparatus against observa- tion. That's about all there is to it. Thus the imaginative designer is bound on one hand by the limi- tations of his raw material, and on the other by those of the pur- pose of his product. Both are fair- ly inflexible. In spite of this rather serious situation, the gentlemen in charge of such matters have managed to cone up with some variations on the basic theme. Three Categories Swimming suits this year fall into three main categories. The ever-popular boxer short this year, as usual, seems destined to account for around 60 per cent of the swimming suit business. They will be appearing in bright colors this year, with stripes em- phasized, especially those in bright red and white. Another trend in the boxer short line is the intro- duction of the new foulard pat- terns, now popular in sport shirts, to the swimming suit field. Models Brief Another popular model is the brief, i.e., the swimming, swim- ming suit. This particular style pushes the coverage limitation slightly, and thus suffers from lack of raw material to change style with. The pattern and de- sign style remains thus about the same from year to year. The brief will appear this sum- mer again following the trend to brighter and more shocking colors, in bright reds, blues and stripes. A new feature in the brief will be the introduction of a reversible model with increased color com- bination possibility. This model will feature, for example, red on one side, and black on the reverse. Boxers Return A new style for this year will be the short boxer, in contra- distinction to the boxer short. This creation features, like thej brief, an elastic cloth which FROM CUBA: Beards Return to Campus A welt-tended beard, undulating gracefully from ear to ear, can set or e:s the followi one far distant from the common Start slowly with the basic exe crowd in seeking employment or cises. The short boxer has, essentially, the top of a brief, but with a box- er-like bottom, which extends part way down the thigh much like a pair of tights. The whole assem- blage is in stretching material, and thus fits the wearer closely. Other structural details of this model include either front or side zippers and reversability. Colors Varied Colors for this year will include plaids of various types, stripes and bright colors. With the reversa- bility feature, these should be available in almost any combina- tion. Some Real Winners For the lunatic fringe, the left wingers in the swimming suit fra- ternity have come up with some real winners. Termed euphenis- tically "comic suits," this line One word sums up men's fashions for 1-95p . . . Continental.' Shorter coats will be the rule in' the first major ,style change since the "drape shape" bowed out to make way for the Ivy League cut. Also in store for, fashionable men in '59 will be a more fitted coat with a" cutaway front and the -"old-style" two button closing. Side vents will be in evidence also. Trousers will join the English style of cuffless bottoms. Cuffs never were popular in Merrie Ole England anyway, and it's only in, America that the dust trappers; caught on. The trousers will also be tapered.1 Black, Grey Popular The popular polors seem to beI black and grey.% The iridescent materials are coming in also withi dacron-wool gabardine the most popular fabric. Lustrous shark-l skins and dacron-wool are the . other two fabrics which will see the most wear this year. Light checks will make some- thing of a comeback with a, houndstooth-check in wool re-j ceiving big advance play from the fashion experts. Sleeves Tapered The coat sleeves will also be7 tapered more than usual. Backabuckled pants have ap- parently had their day. Some of the new styles will have' button- through frontier pockets in frontJ and no pockets in back. The front of almost all styles will be plain or a single pleat' Other features to watch for in '59 will be: the absence of a7 breast pocket in some models, natural shoulders on some cuts1 and softly padded s h o u l d e r s on others, as well as no-pleat trousers. The history of this latest fashion, that actually dates to around 1800, involves England, France, and to some extent, the United States - 1860 vintage. Copied Peasants During the final throes of the French revolution the French no- bility decided that it would be to their advantage, (i.e., keep their heads from being chopped off), to start dressing like the peasants who were now taking over. The English riding coat of 1725 became the frock coat or cutaway of 1800. This same cutaway coat is the height of fashion in 1959. Black and blues became the ac- cepted evening wear colors and still hold their own today. Simi- lgrly the natural shoulder and Ambassador models" of today be- gan way back then. Breeches Die Knee breeches died after the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 when King George IV decreed that trousers were necessary. The trousers were worn cuffless and cut tighter, and the 1959 model trousers are similarly cuffless and slimmer than last years'._ Men didn't accept the center crease in trousers until the '90's when the army officers were wear- ing them. The cuffs appeared around 1900 when Englishmen began turning up their wool trousers on rainy days. According to the story a nobleman forgot to turn his down at a big social event and presto, the style was launched. It was THE thing to do. But now, in 1959, junior execu-l tives and the college' crowd areI returning to cuffless slacks. Ap-t parently they're more practical. They're also easier to tailor. t 'Ivy' Shnirts;) Stay on Top Under bulky, wool sweaters col-s lege men are still wearing shirts ofs all styles to stop that scratchys feeling. In dress shirts, the 'white pox-r ford with button down collar ist still by far the most popular style, i In the colors, blue is the best seller with stone colored linen becomingi more popular.r The changes in the style of dressi shirts has come mostly in the cuffs. The once stylish French cuffs are rapidly dropping out of fashion, with one clothing store in town not even bothering to carryl them except in the tuxedo dress shirt. In their place, much to the cuff link manufacturers' delight,l is the convertible cuff. This com- bines the old French cuffs and the traditional button cuff, with the advantage of being worn either with or without cuff links. Still the barrel cuffs are by far the most popular. In sport shirts, the ivy-styled shirt is still the top seller. Stripes and large plaids are rapidly losing favor to the new styles such as the foulard and the paisley. The small plaid or check is still holding its own. In spite of the wild colors that are being advertised the sub- dued patterns, and colors are still the favorite of most college men. To the now almost traditional ivy-league shirt has been added tapered body styling. This features. a narrow waist, but still retains the ivy-league styling. Even though they are still not perfect, wash and wear shirts are becoming more popular and should be an even bigger seller this spring than last. Vests Again Come1 On Fashion Scene Vests are coming'back into style this year, There will be more three-piece suits offered than last year. The vests are quite functional with many pockets. These will prevent wearing pants loaded down with bulky pockets. Fancy vests will also be on the upgrade. However, plain-color vests will be seen more than the loud checks and plaids of last year.
