THE MICHIGAN DAILY SMALL, FLOWERY: Hat Styles Change with Spring To the average University wo- man the hat >is a small, non- descript item, to be worn only when absolutely n e c e s s a r y - church, weddings and funerals. In order to be perfectly satis- factory, this hat should be so bland and inconspicuous as to be almost invisible when it is firm- ly settled in its nest of curls. This is a sad situation. A prop- erly hatted female cuts a fetch- ing figure. But there is hope - this spring hats are prettier, sprightlier, springier than they have been in years. Smaller Hats Small hats are the rule, which makes good fashion sense with this year's wider shoulders and fuller sleeves. The modified turban or fez gives a sleek, polished look, and is available for almost every occa- sion - woolly tweeds for the early spring coat, bright silk afternoon prints and gleaming jewel tones for gala evenings. Very new are the high-crownedj hats which leave the brow and1 necklines bare and smooth. Brisk and lively looking, they are wear- able with almost any length of hair. They will bring much ac- claim from the lasses who must wear glasses and spend most of their waking hours searching for an Easter bonnet in which their faces look uncluttered. Softer Cloches The cloche is still with us and deeper than ever, but with this difference - a wide, inverted- bowl brim. They are much softer. 11 the tailored shirt is still at the'top of the list for campus wear.. The bob has been given many interpretations by those who both witness and wear it. It is short, sometimes swirly, other times wispy and always tidy. It produces a new softness in silhouette, which is happily devoid of waves. The "wisp-edge" bob- lightly circles the head and swirls strictly sideways across the nape edge, creating an almost windblown, hug the head effect. Return of Classics " Designed for the return of the classics in costume, the "classic" bob will more than adequately complement the spring shirtwaist, long pastel sweater and princess lines. Both sides of the hair style flip into even the most wide eyed damsel's eyes, with the right side movement confined to a flat eye- lash curl and the left to a "droop- wave" that almost conceals both] eyebrow and eyes. At the nape, a short nipped-in effect should be achieved. "r The forward look is the slogan for the "forlock" bob which dis- plays full movements on the face, wispy and decorative, but tidily controlled. 'Little Head Look' The "flippity-curl" bob achieves the little head look, desired by most style-conscious females. A hint of purffiness remains through the crown top, but the longer look tresses of Empire up-sweeps is for- ever gone. Circling the head are rows of wispy curls, which bob with each nod of the head only to settle back in nice neat order. Lovely for afternoon or evening, dressed up with bow or tierra, the "puff-down" bob is the last rem- nant of the bubble-cut remains. Beginning above the ear line, the hair softly poofs out, then subtlely turns in again in time to gree the nape of the neck. In short, and in short hair cuts, cute, casual and neat are the key words for Spring 1959. Trenchcoats Reign Again Trenchcoats, with the advent of Spring weather, will soon return to the Michigan scene. Undisputed khaki, the perennial favorite for all weather conditions, has a new rival this year: olive drab, or Army green. The classic style of straight coat, raglan sleeve, leads, of course, but this style has developed a new, narrower out. This Chesterfield cut is now also appearing in a double- breasted version. Color enters the field of rain- wear, from the inside out. Linings are exciting in their own right, and are often the reason behind the purchase of a particular coat. They appear in ivy stripes and a partic- ularly brilliant red foulard print, .he latter belonging to an olive dra bcoat. As Paris goes, so goes the Amer- ican fashion world. This spring . the Chesterfield is making a comeback. These have not been around since the '40's. A tailored coat, it can sport either a velvet or linen collar. Made in either charcoal, black- or pin-stripes, these are ex- tremely practical for dates and jobs. Also heading the fashion roster are leather coats with detachable fur collars. As a new innovation, the manufacturers have added a pearlized finish. Crushed pearls are sprayed on the coat before it is sold to the stores. The manu- facturers are giving a lifetime guarantee that this finish will re- main on the .coat. Colors Popular The most popular colors for leather are beige, grey and navy. This style also comes as a jacket or three quarter length coat. Most have a belt which encircles the wrist at the end of the sleeve. They sport a yoke collar and have either a straight or flared back. The yoke back whici was im- portant in fall has carried over to the spring line. These coats usually sport a shawl collar and are wrap-arounds. The Chinese collared coat is go- ing out of style but the stores still carry a few of them. Most sleeves are narrow and the wearer is en- couraged to push them up to just below the elbow. Coats Tailored Spring coats are tailored this fall. With the exception of the leather coats, there are no flared or pleated backs. All have a straight line with a pleat near the bottom to facilitate walking. Shoulder lines are also narrow- er. Combined with the straight body, this gives the woman a long, lean look which is tres chic. Used for the first time this fall,. the new "souffle' material has be- come so popular that it has been retained for spring coats. These coats are usually in subdued plaids and sport a large round collar and three large buttons evenly spaced throughout the length of the coat. There are several gay whimsies for the girl with mid-semester blues. Mere veils with added bows, birds, orhbuttons rest on the head like, a handkerchief and afford the barest minimum of hat. Great cabbage roses, attached to a small comb or a narrow head band, are great fun and femininity. And, of course, the popular and youthful headband is available in more styles and fabrics than ever and affords a good excuse for a hat. Crisp Looks Certain styles .are so flattering that they are literally evergreen. The crisp, fresh look of a Breton or sailor spells spring to any wo- man. No amount of Sunday- 'mprning drizzle can dampen the spirits provided by a big, flowery Easter bonnet. This may be the season for an Ann Arbor fashion revolution. Women will stop shopping for a hat to wear with that Easter suit, and begin to shop for a suit to: wear with that very special Easter hat. Fitted and double- breasted coats have also lost thefr popularity. The classic wrap- around coat is still in style but buttons are more popular. According to one fashion expert, spring coat manufacturers are having a bad year due to the year round u e of leather and cash- mere. The latter'in grey, beige and black wrap-around or buttons are extremuely practical and durable. Jaclkets and car coats have gone with the wind as far as spring is concerned. Wearers find they are too heavy for comfort and would rather wear a plain cardigan- for sport use.
