THE MICHIGAN DAILY Accessories To Accent Straight Chemise Line Although the fashion world has seen the demise of the chemise, the majority of this spring's acces- sories still retain the easy-going look of that outmoded style. That light-heartedness indica- tive of spring is embodied not only in the shape (or lack thereof!) of the season's accessories but also in their gay floral prints and fluid colors. A vestige of the chemise age decked out in new colors is the beaded necklace of two or three strands. The opaque-colored ropes are featured in combinations of blue -lilac, pink - cranberry and shades of apricot and green, with the colors highlighting matching bracelets, earrings and pins. Hit- ting closer to home, fresh-water pearl bibs offer a relaxed touch without lasoo proportions. Pins Prominent Prominent, to be sure, will be circle pins, made in god or silver,. tooled or plain, to offset the twist- ed- silver costume jewelry which often resembles blow-torch crea- tions. Whether a clutch, chemise or feedbag, purses for spring will be smaller than their winter prede- cessors. Coeds Choose New Polish The latest in nail polish news is the new gold tone colors recently put on the market. Gold colors are available in three different shades-rose, pink and frosted gold. Another new product now of- fered is the spray nail polish. The enamel is guaranteed to dry in seconds. The polish has no harm- ful effects and even contains a mild antiseptic to avoid infection. Patent leather, straw and linen covered with plastic, spring clas- sics, will reappear, but new lines' will feaure a softer texture, with shirring and gathering creating this texture where the fabric doesn't. Flowers Attract Flowers abound in this spring's fashion news, and floral prints of all dimensions and species will reach even this season's belts. Settled around the waist line, they take the form of wide cumber- bands or narrow reversible belts with buckleless velco fasteners. With the waistline only moder- ately displaced, more attention is being paid to the neckline, with jewelry, collars and scarves. The regulation white Peter Pan collar has blossomed into pique, em- broidered or georgette or lace crea- tions, frequently with matching cumberbands. Gay print scarves, filling' in a deep neckline or gently draping high-necked dresses, need not be restricted to neckwear this season. Two chiffon scarf squares in bright go-together colors may be tied to a belt or wound around a hat by the more imaginative. Umbrellas Styled. Bared against those promising April showers, umbrellas, although dignified in their slenderness, will acquire a gayer appearance in their floral prints. And even gloves,,the finishing touch to a perfect spring costume, are not immune to prints this season. Whether of the nylon or leather stretch, pigskin, kid or fabric variety, they will range from standard white to the colored, em- broidered and floral. With the abundance of color and prints, it will take a clever eye. to coordinate the various- acces- sories; but these "added attrac- tions" should trap that light- hearted spring feeling. Strap Heels, Black Patents Place High Shedding shoe-boots and long underwear, the modern miss should welcome the change in footwear that comes with spring. Conspicuously absent from the new spring styles are severely pointed toes, but very much pres- ent are T-strap pumps with intri- cate split and braidea designs. For with hemlines hovering somewhere below the knees, this season's shoes have come up to meet the chal- lenge. No Points! With more fabric in the actual shoe, less emphasis is being placed on severely high or thin heels. The majority of the season's pump and mule styles are backed up with mid,. bobbin, or spool heels, better suited for increased warm weather walking. Spring always signals the re- turn of black patent leather, and this year is no exception. How- ever, many shoes made with the shiny material will walk into a -girl's wardrobe in bright spring colors-green, geranium, bronze. Deldi suede, a well-wearing re- versed calf that is now on the market, is being featured in many designers' lines of shoes and matching handbags in subtle, pas- tel and intense tones. Colors Complement One of the new intense colors, indigo blue, will complement many outf its, while multicolored but soft tapesty patterns will offset subtle basic costumes. On the ground level, spring her- alds the time of year when toes and heels peek out from scanty sandals. Whether they orginate in an Italian haystack, chain gang or ranch, many of this season's straws, metal embellished and lea- ther versions will feature com- fortable insteps and colorful frills. For the more conservative schoolgirl, store windows will dis- play T-strap or "skimmer" flats and "jazz" oxfords in soft, pliable leather or breathing punched peg. Whether for school or dress af- fairs, this season's line of foot- wear is enough to tempt even the most ardent barefoot nature lover.j LONG SQUARE LOOK: Women Favor Bulky Sweaters The long, square look in sweat- ers is the obsession of the girls this year again, hiding what nor- mally is displayed, and disfigur- ing that which is displayed. As was the trend in last year's fashions, the heavy bulky knits have remained in the fore, but with their extra length and added width, girls' figures have taken on a grotesquely distorted appearance. Boat Necks The newest feature that has been added is the huge boat neck, giving the sweater the appearance of falling off the girls' shoulders, like a midriff blouse. Most popular in this line is the boxy boat-neck, bulky which reaches down to the hips. There is no tapering at the hips; the sweater just hangs until it can hang no further. At the bottom are two pockets which emphasize the length of the garment. Cable knits which were im- mensely popular in recent years are rarely seen on store shelves or in display windows any more. In their place are the brushed, shag- gy wools, looped mohairs, and the imported alpacas which are heavy and thus do the same job as the 'cables' did. Novelties Popular Moving out of the line of the 'heavy's' and into the realm of the more 'feminine' styles, the lambswool and fur-blends are still; holding their own, and even seem to be more popular than ever be-, fore. Novelties, with collars and fancy designs, have been the best- selling styles of these fabrics. Also, the three-quarter length sleeve which had such great suc- cess last year has continued to please the new sweater buyers this season. The Perry Como 'shetland car- digan', which made such a fan- tastic debut last season, has curbed its flood this year. Though it is still quite popular, the sleeveless knitted. vest-sweater, which is worn over a blouse, has received' more of an applause. It too is long, and cardigan, and usually has three buttons on the bottom. 1 Off-Shades Chosen The colors which the designers chose for this year's sweaters were more off-shade of true tones than true tones themselves. w FRAMES; I sizes and styles - d . . . $1.00and up S of all kinds HR'S} Bookstore NO 2-5669 -Daily-Allan winder LOOSE AND BULKY-Among the most popular fashions this year is the long, loose and very casual bulky knit sweater with straight lines and a wide boat neck. These fulfill the essential need for coed's clothes - that of comfort. The ribbed pattern lengthens the sweater's line. Rusts and gblds were an off- shoot of the orange and yellow families, and royal blue seemed especially popular as a derivative of the blue family. Whites, blacks and red, of course, are always popular. The classic cardigans, pullovers and synthetic fabrics are still be- ing bought and sold. It is likely that these will never disappear completely from the list of sweat- ers of the fashion-conscious fe- male. Soap, Creams Keep Face Glowing for Spring Look s .y - k ~sea shore brill iant There's nothing like a touch of powder on the nose and a blush of rouge on the cheeks to give a girl that "breath of spring" look. The trick, of course, is finding just the right balance between na- ture and nurture to bring fresh, young beauty to the fore,, instead of hiding Mother Nature's gifts beneath a cake of patented mud. As in everything, the secret of a well-done make-up job depends' on the right beginning-a com- pletely clean face. To this, tiny dots of liquid make-up are lightly' added to the forehead, nose, cheecks and chin, spread on care- fully avoiding the jawline and hairline. 'Red Magic'7 Next comes the all-important application of rouge-cage or li- quid a is preferred by the indi- vidual. Proper application can be+ made by sucking in the cheeks and' gently, ever so gently, applying the red magic to the hollows.
