THE MICHIGAN DAILY Gymnasts See Action Champion Illini Team Here Tonight To Oppose Undefeated Wolverines FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 195 ' ,. Skiers 14 TheSale is On! Hurry! Hurry! While the selection lasts! Men's and Ladies' colorful SKI SWEATERS I 0 I By FRED KATZ Local gymnastic fans will be treated to one of the biggest dual meets in Michigan history this evening at 8 when Illinois' Big Ten champions (eight times running) invade the I-M gymnasium. Admission is by I-D cards for students and faculty and one dol- lar for all others. For sheer dramatics this meet will be difficult to top. Both teams are undefeated. Illinois has a 9-0 mark in dual competition while !Michigan has won one less. Strong Squads Each of the team's coaches-the Wolverines' Newt Loken ,and the Illini's Charlie Pond-is proclaim- ing the respective squads as his strongest in years. And that means it will take some doing to top the visitors, who, in addition to their horde of Conference trophies, have won the NCAA's four of the last five years. The meet is expected to serve as a fairly reliable barometer as to who rates the favorite's role for the Big Ten meeting coming up in just one week. Both ,teams have rolled over the same foes in im-' pressive fashion and appear to be in a distinct class by themselves. But Loken forewarns, and the records back him, that "the winner isn't necessarily a shoe-in for the title." Three years ago Michigan edged the Illini, but the latter still1 walked off with the league crown. To whip Illinois, the Wolverines are going to have to nullify the points sure to be scored by the great senior all-around combina- toin of Abe Grossfield and Don Tonry, which is as difficult as it sounds. Illini Given Edge "To beat two Olympians of Grossfeld and Tonry's caliber is quite a task," Loken said. "Because of them, Illinois has to be given the edge." The meet is most likely to be decided by the performances of Michigan's tumbling and trampo- line units, both of which are some- what stronger than the Illini's. Loken commented in-a thumb- nail prediction "If we can gain a considerable edge in the tram- poline and tumbling events, and if the apparatus team can break up their one-two punch, then wehave an excellent chance of winning." Other outstanding Illinois threats include Pat Bird on the apparatus, all-around man Ed Thinclads Host Added Entries Toronto and Wayne State have been added to Purdue's entry as opposition for Michigan's track team here tomorrow night. The meet, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Yost Field House, will fea- ture only regular indoor dual events-thus excluding three Big Ten standards, the 300-, 600-, and 1000-yd. runs. Michigan Coach Don Canham announced, however, that Wolver- ine varsity runners will compete in these Conference events with possible opposition from several outstanding freshmen performers. The meet is the final home ap- pearance of the indoor season. Gombos and tumbler-trampolinist Allan Harvey. To stay in contention following the Illini-dominated events, the Wolverines must get great per- formances from its tramp team of Ed Cole, former NCAA champion, Dick Kimball, Frank Newman and Chuck Clarkson, and from tum- blers Bill Skinner and Jimmy Brown. Bar Specialist Rivaling Grossfeld and Tonry in the apparatus competition will be co-captain Jim Hayslett, who is reaching top form in his high bar and parallel bars specialties after recovering from a chest injury.
