Thursday, August 29, 1968 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Five Thursday, August 29, ~I 968 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Pacje Fve TRAFFIC DISRUPTED DAILY OFFICIAL BULLETIN New footbridge to the Hill y MICHAEL THORYN Dirty feet will be presented to persons walking in the Forest- North University area by Palmer Field for at least another month. A 15-foot wide pedestrian and bicycle bridge costing $260,000 will carry residents of the Hill over a re-built and widened . Forest Avenue. 1 James Brinkerhoff, director of busines operations said the bridge would be finished in December. Jack Weidenbach, Director of Plant Extension, hopes for a No- vember opening. "The work is part of a long range program to improve the flow Steam lines go underground The gaping holes and piles of dirt pedestrians must avoid at crucial intersections are the ex- teridr'signs of an extension of the Un'iversity's steam lines. Jack Weidenback Director of Plant Extension said, "We used to put steam pipes in tunnels. This steam line will be buried directly in the ground. Men will enter through a manhole to check press- ure," he added. The project, designed to increase available steam pressure has an estimated cost of $314,000. Steam is used to heat University buildings. There are five excava- tion sites on the Central Campus. of traffic around the east side of the central campus," said Univer- sity Planner Fred Mayer. When the master plan is completed, many roads surrounding the cen- tral campus will be closed to traf- fic. 11 "North University has been closed between Washtenaw and Forest," Mayer said. "Traffic should be back on Forest by mid- October," he added. The cost of the work which will eventually involve portions of Geddes,. Washtenaw, North Uni-l versity, Fletcher, and Huron as well as the bridge was estimated at $1.7 million by Brinkerhoff. The University is sharing costs with the city. The project will cost the University $800,000 including the value of University-owned land lost to roads, according to Brinkerhoff. "The biggest dust problem is behind us," he said. "Forest has been graded." The project, part of Ann Arbor's Six-Year Capital Improvement Program began in May but was slowed by a building trades strike that a f f e c t e d construction throughout the Detroit metropo- litan area. The City Department of Roads and Traffic urges motorists to de- tour on Washtenaw and Packard and narrower streets that are not affected. Pedestrians in the area think the improvements will be "great when they're done" but currently,I "kind of a pain." "We'll be slogging through mud pretty soon," one woman said.
