World Whoopee I INTERNATIONAL PARTY . 11 The four worst things about the Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) show in the Union Assembly Hall are the institutional yellow walls. The work itself is on the whole well- executed and interesting, espec- ially when you consider the in- herent problems of an art student in Ann Arbor. This City offers little in the way of technological or financial aid to artists. The facilities at the art school do not allow for work of the scale or scope expected of a professional artist. Funds are usually inadequate, and the only art supply store near the school hardly lends financial encourage- ment. While the works are hardly shocking, they show both sensi- tivity and maturity. One profes- sor of art suggests there is little in the show which can be called original; there is too much hero worship or mimicry of such art world scions as Oldenberg or Stella. This criticism is too harsh. The influences are certainly there, but so is the originality. For example, the effect of Kath- leen Finneran's sculpture "Fix- ture no. 3" is not so different from the ironic effect of Olden- berg's hard and soft light switch- es. Yet, her approach ishdecidedly more formal. Influence and syn- thesis. Rocco Lodise's "Vibration" re- flects a similar originality. In the tradition of Optical and Minimal Art, the painting destroys its own reality. The edges, actually straight, are unquestionably curv- ed. The effect is uncanny. The show will run until next Wednesday. See it. IPAYIS, Ar COLOR by Dexe United Artiste 41 r 'E IMNII, At the International Center FRI., NOV. 22 FR EEadmission, refreshments 9:00 P.M.-12:00 P.M.
