M' Frosh to face undefeated Rockets to form a CARD SI at this week's game COM Behind north end z By JOE MARKER Toledo sends its high-flying freshman football scoring machine against the Michigan frosh tomor- row night at Ann Arbor H i g h School's Holloway Field. The contest, which begins at 7:30 and is Michigan's second and last game, should provide a mark-. ed contrast to last year's defensive struggle, a 15-3 Wolverine triumph featured by three field goals and a safety. A comparison of games against their o n e common opponent, Bowling Green, does little to sep- arate the two teams, who feature offenses that can score at will. The Wolverines marched for 487 yards in crushing the Falcons 43-6, while Toledo, who is 5-0 for the season, rolled up a 42-12 verdict over the same outfit. LOTS OF BACKS Michigan coach Bill Dodd has so many good backfield men that he can afford to be undecided on his starting offense. For instance, at quarterback, he has the task of deciding between southpaw Bruce Elliott and Dennis Connell, both more than adequate performers. In the Bowling Green game, Con- nell started, while Elliott moved to the defensive backfield. Similar dilemmas face Dodd at the, other positions. Either John Seyferth or Frank Gusich rates the nod at fullback. Billy Taylor, who led the Michigan ground game to 321 yards against Bowling Green, seems all set to go at the tailback slot. However, Tom Darden is battl- ing Glenn Doughty for the flanker assignment. If Darden starts, of quarterback Chuck Ealey. He has two outstanding receivers in Donny Fair and Tom Robey and uses them liberally. In addition to his passing prow- ess..Ealey is also the team's lead- ing rusher as a scrambling quar- terback a la Fran Tarkenton. About the only way to stop such a double-threat performer is to put on a fierce rush by the line- men, which is Dodd's main defen- sive objective. INJURED DEFENSE This is easier said than done, however, as the frosh line, as it has been all season, remains plagued by injuries. Leon H a r t and Mike Hall, who represent over a quarter t o n of beef between them, will not see any action. In addition, Tom Beckman, who has a bruised knee, and Mike Taylor, sporting a sprained wrist are def- initely question marks, along with huge Neil Borel. With the effectiveness of the line reduced by injuries, the de- fensive backfield assumes in- creased importance. They simply must be able to stop Ealey's aer- ial onslaught if Michigan is to win. It is perhaps with this in mind that Dodd might shift of- I fensive stars Bruce Elliott a n d Glenn Doughty to the defensive unit. What it all boils down to is this: The Wolverines, with their offen- sive talent, should be a b I e to score on the Toledo defense. If they can stop Ealey, they will no 1 doubt win. If they can't, the game might be a repetition of last week's Northwestern-Iowa circus, an event in which 102 points were scored. r TUESDAY, NOV. 19 BILLY TAYLOR GLENN DOUGHTY * Volunteer Services 7:30-9:30 p.m. * Israel Universities Michigan Union Ballroom ISRAEL NOw Doughty will switch to the de- fenders delight in upsetting op- fensive unit. AMERICANS DISAPPOINTING: [ Ashe upset in British tennis tourney Gridde Pickings 1 0 1 1 Mercredi soir: la fievre monte au Michigan Daily, la revolution LONDON (P) - The surprise elimination of Arthur Ashe, Amer- ican's Open champion, created a furor yesterday in the British Cov- ered Courts Tennis Championship. Ashe, who last week led the U.S. Davis Cup team to an Inter- Zone victory over India in Puerto Rico, lost to a little known Briton, Gerald Battrick 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. Later, in an informal interview, the American admitted he gave only 80 per cent effort. One of the tournament direc- tors, Derek Penman, said he was disappointed over Ashe's perform- ance and the first round defeat of two other U.S. Davis Cup aces,. Clark Graebner and Charlie Pasa- rell. Indicating that he felt that the man who two weeks ago upset semble imminente, la confrontation est inevitable.
