Saturday, October 26, 1968 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Five Saturday, October 26, 1968 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Page Five Band, take the field! What would you say about the Michigan Marching Band if given a chance? "It's the best marching band in the country, nay, the world. What other band has cut two best selling albums?" But being a Michigan bandsman isn't all glory and good pay, as some would believe, and sometimes it can be a down- right sweaty, dirty, lip-cracking job. Bandsmen are up early in the morning and to bed late at night (as those of us who have lived in the Hill-Division street area know) practicing their trade into the wee hours of the morning. It's truly a miracle of our time that Messrs. Revelli ard Cavender .can transform a motley mass of 200 hornblowers into a manicured phalanx of uniformed bands- men shapedinto an aircraft carrier on Saturday afternoon. In other years, when Michigan's football fortunes sagged, it has often been the band's great halftime performance that has kept the Wolverine reputation out of the dumps. For when they launch into a stirring rendition, of "Yellow and Blue," there is scarce a dry eye in the house among the alumni. When the band leaps onto the field at halftime and exe- cutes those famous marvelous formations we know so well, or when they crank up and do "Hawaiian War Chant" after the game is over, it's a treat for both our eyes and our ears. It's nice to have such a good band at Michigan. Photographed by Peter Dreyfuss, Sara Krulwich, Eric Pergeaux, Larry Robins, and Andy Sacks Rehearsal on the blacktop at Wines Field U- U: ............
