The council compiles a summer job directory and directs a place- ment clearing house for part-time jobs on campus. Last year, 585 firms interviewed for full-time employment at the service. More than 1,200 students were interviewed. Sixty-nine per- cent of persons hired went to firms of more than 5,000 employees. The average starting salary is about $9,250. Some 49 percent of the students hired tend to remain in the Mid- west, 31 percent in Michigan. One engineer last year collect- ed nine job offers through the ser- vice. He was given plane tickets for plant tours in several cities. "By stacking up the trips, he cashed in some of the tickets and made some extra money," a sen- ior engineer said.
