THE MICHIGAN DAILY Friday, September 27, 1968 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Friday, September 27, 1968 e your SOUTH BEND, Ind. (P) - Top- ranked Purdue and runner-up Notre Dame meet for the 49th time in their football history Sat- urday but the game is only a rub- ber snatch for Jim Seymour and' Leroy Keyes. Seymour, Notre Dame's record- breaking pass catcher, and Keyes, Purdue's master of a l1 gridiron trades, played their first collegiate game two years ago on the same Notre Dame turf where 59,075 will watch their duel Saturday. Seymour caught three scoring passes to lead the Irish to a 26-14 win enroute to a national champ- ionship. Keyes scrambled 96 yards with a fumble for a Boilermaker score. cLast year, seymour was held to one completion by Keyes who played offense, defense, passed, ran and kicked Purdue to a 28-21- triumph. Purdue coach Jack Mollenkopf has Keyes re.d to go Saturdayh Notre Dame is listed as a touch- down favorite for the game which will be televised regionally in the Midwest and parts of the East, South and Southwest. "If I'm not winded," Keyes said yesterday, "I can handle Jim one- on-one, even though he's two inches taller than I am and has great moves." Irish quarterback Terry Han- ratty has other thoughts. "I don't really think any one defender in college football can cover Jim Seymour," Hanratty said after he led the Irish to an opening game 45-21 drubbing of Oklahoma. Hanratty a 1 so is playing his rubber match against Purdue. He was on the throwing end of Sey- mour's three touchdowns in 1966. Keyes, recalled that game Thurs- day. "Hanratty had all day and it was just too much for us. If he gets rid of the ball from the time it's snapped, we're in trou- ble." eyes in gridiron due Four game sweep. -a. Tier shocker By GORDON BEARD BALTIMORE (AP) - The Detroit Tigers could pull a baseball shocker and sweep the World Series from the St. Louis Cardinals in four games, says coach Billy Hunter of the Baltipmore Orioles. "I liken Detroit's situation to ours in 1966," Hunter said, "and if the Tigers win the first game, they have a chance to win four in a row." "We hid a young club in 1966 without World Series experience, except for Frank Robinson," Hunter recalled: 'There was some talk about us losing four straight when we ran up against Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale. "But Frank hit a homer in the first inning and Brooks Robinson followed with another one. Then Moe Drabowsky came in and showed the Dodgers could be stopped at the plate. Our kids found out right away the Dodgers weren't invincible." The Cards, like the Dodgers of two years ago, are experienced at combatting the World Series pressure. They have won three pennants in the past five year and were wdld champs last year when Bob Gib- son hurled three victories over Boston. "If Boston can take the Cards to seven games, Detroit can beat them.," Hunter said. "The Tigers are a better club than Boston was last year.' He pointed specifically to the Tigers' feat of winning 30 games this season in their last turn at bat, calling it "almost unbelieveable." Detroit Manager Mayo Smith has yet to decide between Wilson and Mickey Lolich as a second-game series starter behind 31-game winner Dennis- McLain. Smith said he'd make a decision after each pitches in Sunday's final regular season. o G rc o You're in charge of building the floait decoriting the house and dressing up-the party. V-pomnaps JIM SEYMOUR Notre Dame's veteran offensive line gave Hanratty all the time he needed against Oklahoma but Coach Ara Parseghian is worried about the size of Purdue's defen- ders. "They'll be difficult for Terry to throw over if they come in with their -hands high," Parseghian said. Purdue's four front-line defend- ers average nearly 6-feet-5. The Irish have an infantry corps for Saturday that was not- ably missing against Purdue last year w h e n Hanratty threw 63 passes Jeff Zimmerian and Bob Glad- ieux gained easily against Okla-I homa and Coley O'Brien, o n c e Hanratty's backup man, is at af halfback slot where he can'be used on run-pass plays.I Keyes is not making the Notrej Dame invasion alone.
