THE MICHIGAN DAILY Friday, September 27, 1968 Werner: Cool head in a hotgame By ROBIN WRIGHT Mark Werner was born into the straight man's. world.I He's faultless-no hang-ups, coniplexes or inhibitions. Well-mannered, diligent, de- voted to his family, and the ideal victim for every mother's daugh- ter, Werner is a pleasant relief from the stereotype joc. An unemotional marvel, Wer- ner doesn't get psyched about a game. Even after two years of working for a chance to play, he couldn't get worked up over his! performance in Saturday's en- couter with California. "I don't let myself get nervous on game day," Werner explains. "I'm confident from practice that I can play well, so I see no need to worry. "It's the same on the field. I'm concentrating so hard on punting that I forget about the crowd. Be- sides, that way I know I'll do well. "In high school I used to get nervous tile day before the game. After school Id go home and list-I en to a collection of marching band records and play the game in my head. After I finished the game, I wasn't afraid anymore." His method works, despite its improbability. In his first game 'Confidence has a lot to (o 'experience last week, he kicked for 396 yards in 10 appearances. Werner relates a possible lack of this confidence to the perform- ance of the team. "Confidence has a lot to do with team effort. I don't think the coaches express their faith in us enough. If they were more positive in spirit and attitude, maybe it'd rub off on the team." STRAIGHT MAN Although so devoted to football that he dug a 100x40 foot drive- way this summer to get in shape, Werner "doesn't mess around enough to be a joc," describes his roommate. "He was born into the straight man's world." 0 loner, Werner grooves on silence. He built a sailboat last summer "in order to enjoy soli- tude and complete peace. Sailing gives; me time to think, with no interference but the wind and rushing water. There's nothing as healthy as being alone for a while.- "I like to play golf by myself too. It seems to be more of a chal- with leam entort.f lenge. I'm able to concentrate on the mechanics of the game and work to improve my game, where- as with friends, I need to be so- ciable and therefore can't work as hard on skills.", PERFECTIONIST Perfectionism is the theme of Werner's life. He already has his life laid out., A double major in physical edu- cation and businesssadministra tion, Werner explains his plans, "after graduation, I intend to go into business with my grand- father, designing and manufac- turing pumps for industrial use. "I want a degree in phys. ed. because athletics have always been a major part of my life. And I'd like to remain active by coach- ing on the side, even if it's just for a sandlot team, "Honesty is the best policy" aptly describes Wesner's pattern' of action. A prime example was the decision to stick with a foot- ball tender at Michigan, despite a preference to play basketball at Ohio State. BASKETBALL PREFERENCE Werner comments, "Until col-i lege football has always been sec- ondary to basketball. I never par- ticularly cared about playing foot- ball in college. "I had my heart set on playing basketball at Ohio State. But when I didn't hear from Ohio, I decided not to let the Michigan football offer go by. Two days after I signed with Michigan Ohio State called to offer me a basket- ball tender. I was really disap- pointed.1 "It would have been possible to get a release from Michigan, but when I make a decision I always stick to it. Besides, it wouldn't Gridde Pickings These next few seconds you spend ireading these immortal lines may be among the cherished moments of. your life. As guest selector this week we've selected Lloyd Graff, who once had the distinction of acting as Sports Editor of this diurnal journal, Not only a writer, he also excelled in athletic endeavor, his greatest thrill being the opportunity to quarterback the powerful Daily Libels in 1965. This word to the wise should be sufficient: the concensus below should not be regarded as infallible. The combined Sports Editor's percentage is a miniscule .575, not a significant improvement over what could be done by flipping coins. This is your chance, monsieur or madenmoiselle, to pit your superior foresight and sagacity against that of the Chosen Ones and emerge victorious. 0 MARK WERNER kE t t t r._ _._._.__..._._. . A strong civil rights advocate, Werner sees the Johnson Admin- istration as a failure in dealing. with the black problem.7 "The program in the last four7 years has provided only handouts, and the blacks resent it. I talked to many black factory employes last summer, and what they need is a chance for more responsibility,I instead of getting stuck on a masst assembly line." As for solutions, Werner sug- gested that, "I knew exactly what to do; I'd be running for president." Finally revealing a basic flaw,r Werner plans to support Dick Nixon as the hero of the American people. t )AY k G, RALLY DWIS, New Politics and campus politi- 1. MICHIGAN at Duke 2.
