Co-op aids consumers
By MARION SELZ
Traditionally everything, from
apartments to tunafish to Kleenex,
cost more in Ann Arbor. But a
new University Co-op based on the
concept of united consumer power
may bring down the high prices.
Bill Price, Grad., president of
the University Co-op, says the idea

NEED SOME TLC? Join The Michigan
Daily now and avoid the fall rush.
the faculty complained about the
lack of a University store with low
prices similar to the Harvard Co-
op and the Berkeley Co-op.
The Student Relations Commit-
tee appointed a subcommittee
which investigated the matter and
concluded that a non-profit store
to provide lower prices for the
University community would be
feasible.
"The purpose of a co-op is to
use consumer buying power to
lower the cost of living," Price ex-
plains. "It is possible to achieve
this goal in two ways: either you
go into business for yourself, or
you can negotiate preferential
treatment from merchants."
The Co-op is presently working
on both fronts. However, because
it is less expensive to provide serv-
ices than to set up a store, most
progress had been made in the
service area.
At the Co-op office in the base-
ment of the Union, for example, a
car dealers' cost list is available
for people interested in comparing
retail and dealers' prices on cars.
The Co-op will not be competing
against the new Student Book
Store, which will replace the pres-
ent University Store in the Union.
"We wil work hand-in-hand with
separate operating boards," says
store manager Dennis Webster.
"Both have the same ends: serv-
ing the student body' and com-
munity."
The Co-op intends to charge a
$5 membership fee, to pay for
more services, such as a group
auto insurance plan for student
members. There also is a plan for
setting up a food co-operative,
Price says. Members would get to-
gether under the auspices of the
Co-op and order large quantities
of groceries direct from whole-
salers.
