Although no one really doubted it - the Hoosiers possessed far too much depth - the earlier defeats of Mark Spitz and Gary Hall brought the haughty Hoosiers back into the realm of mortal swimmers. In part of yesterday's competi- tion, Michigan's Juan Bello and Byron MacDonald finished fourth and fifth respectively in the 100- yard butterfly in a tight race with Spitz. Goaltenders Ed Giachomin of New York and Rogatien Vochon of Montreal had staged a brilliant scoreless duel through the first 2 12 periods. Both teams had good chances to score only to have the goalies repeatedly come up with sharp, s o m e t i m e s spectacular saves. Then, Pete Mahovlich finally broke through Giachomin to give the Canadiens the lead with 8:33 left to play. J. C. Tremblay and Yvan Cournoyer assisted on the goal.
