PROCEURES FOR MOVING OFF-CAMPUS Students may move off-cam- pus only if they have no prior commitment in residence halls, fraternities, sororities, the Inter- Cooperative Council, and other University - associated housing units. Most apartments are in new or fairly new buildings and they will be fillled with groups of single students as a rule. There are some new efficiency- apart- ments which have been specific- ally designed for two single stu- dents and their average rent is $160 per month plus electricity. Most apartments have been de- signed for three, four or five single students and the price range is from $60 to $80 per person per month. Most ofbthem have enough furniture but they do not al- ways have a desk for each stu- dent nor do they have small end tables, small lamps, pillows, etc. They are invariably carpeted throughout and they usually contain room air conditioners. Some of them have very fine furniture, dishwashers, central air conditioning and so forth. : There are several buildings which have swimming pools, some have study rooms or party rooms or T.V. lounges. Sometimes there are parking facilities. It is not true that all buildings in Ann Arbor are re- quired to provide parking. It is true that apartments which are built in the future must provide parking spaces. Dishes and lin- ens are never furnished but sometimes vacuum cleaners are provided for each corridor. There is very little available these days in older, inexpensive apartments. There are very few one-person apartments for $80 to $100 per month, or two-per- son apartments for under $125 per month. It will be largely a matter of luck or ingenuity or both if you find such a place. Be sure to ask which of the things in theapartment belong in the apartment and which be- long to- the present tenants. If the landlord promises to provide something for you or to do some decorating ask for it in writing. There Is a large demand for single family houses by groups of students but there are not many such houses available. You- can have your own bedroom and the other facilities you will share are larger than in most apartments. If you see houses as you walk around the campus area where it is obvious that students are living, you might simply stop at the door and inquire about fu- ture availability and ask how to contact the landlord. You will have to use some ingenuity to get first chance at any houses that may be up for rent next fall. The price for a furnished house will vary from around $50 to $80 per person per month. When house rent is quoted to you, usually the cost of utilities are not included. ROOMS There are quite a few rooms still available each year though the number is diminishing. Linens and cleaning are some- times provided. They are fur- nished with the necessities for sleeping and studying only. Some of them are shabby, some are very luxurious in beautiful, private homes. There are a very few small rooming houses where there are kitchen privileges. If the place is clean and kept that way by the landlord this is a very good arrangement finan- cially if all you want is a place to cook and a modicum of privacy. Another way to economize is to take a room near an Inter- cooperative Council house and eat your meals at the ICC house. Sometimes fraternities o f f e r meals to students who are not members. And some fraternities and sororities are now taking in non-members for room and/or board. The price range for all kinds of rooms is from $10 to $20 per week. Some landlords were ask- ing for up to $100 for a single sleeping room last fall but this arrangement is uneconomical. It is possible to find a modern, luxurious, completely-furnished, three-bedroom apartment for $300 per month and share it with only two other students. There are no boarding houses in the campus area, SOURCES OF HOUSING INFORMATION . The Daily, bulletin boards lo- cated in the basement of the Michigan Union and in the Michigan League, and some gr a dua te and professional schools offer listings of avail- able rental units. The Off-Campus Housing Bu- reau posts an up-to-date list of apartments and rooms. All list- ings are in buildings approved by the bureau.
