Frosh meet Alpena in finale By ELLIOT LEGOW Although basketball has not been a great success at Michigan * this year, there has been a great deal of encouragement in the guise of the freshman cagers. With an 8-2 record to date, the Baby Blue will be in action to- night for the last time this sea- son when they tackle Alpena Community College in a 7:30 game at Crisler Arena (admission free). The Wolveripes. are coming off their biggest victory of the season, a 113-79 thumping of Oakland last Saturday. In that game six players hit in double figures and John Lockard reached his high 'for the year with 29. Lockard, Henry Wilmore, a n d Ernie Johnson will be'manning the Michigan front line tonight and can be expected to cause Alpena fits. The three rank as the top scor- ers and top rebounders for the Baby Blue; Wilmore is first in scoring and Lockard tops in re- bounds. Wilmore has scored at a 22 point per game pace for Michi- gan and has a shooting aver- age of 57 per cent. Wilmore has hit for a high of 34 points, grab- bed as many as 18 rebounds, and made good on as much as 75 per cent of his shots. Wilmore has outstanding moves and is the type of player who can bring excitement back to Michigan basketball. Johnson, the starter at center is averaging 17 points a game, despite a few off-days of late, and also utilizes his 6-8 frame to' snag' 10 rebounds per game. The improvement in Lockard's play has been great with the Oak- land game infinitely his finest of the year. Lockard is the most ag- gressive rebounder on the s q u a d with a 12 per game average and boosted his scoring average to 13 with last week's 29. The starters in the backcourtt ABi Iiboa rd Yost Field House will be clos- ed to intramural participants today and tomorrow. * * * The University High School Gym will be open for general play from 12 noon to 10:30 p.m. on weekdays to all stu- dents and faculty. Tables will be available for practice at 11 a.m. dailly sports NIGHT EDITOR: BILL ALTERMAN for Michigan will be 6-4 Leon Ro- berts and 5-9 Greg Buss. Roberts started the season as a forward but was shifted into the backcourt..He has a good out- side shot, a 13 point game aver- age, and a near perfect aim from the charity line. Buss just moved into the start- ing quintet three games ago, and despite a low scoring average, has been very impressive. Buss can hit from the outside-witness his season high of 17-but generally passes up shooting opportunities, r preferring to feed his teammates. For the first time in the season the Baby Blue will be appearing as the main attraction, and it's right that they should be, as next year these same players will be the stars of the varsity.
