Thursday, February 19, 1970 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Thursday, February 19, 1970 THE MICHIGAN DAILY McLain speaks secretly at gambling investigation CHANCE TO STAR: Cazzie develops de DETROIT VP) - Pitching star Denny McLain spent about 451 minutes yesterday testifying be- fore a federal grand jury investi- gating interstate gambling, federal officials said., U.S. Atty. James Brickley de- Sclined to reveal what McLain had said, explaining that he was bound by the secrecy of the grand jury proceedings. Brickley said McLain's appear- ance was voluntary and stressed that the pitcher was not sub- $ poenaed to appear. McLain failed to appear in Southfield District Court yester- day in answer to his landlord's eviction suit alleging the Detroit Tigers' $90,000 a year pitcher is $2,450 behind in home rent. The case was rescheduled for to- morrow after Orland Ellis, an at- torney representing the landlord, told district judge Clarence Reid an out-of-court settlement is being attempted. McLain originally was to have answered the eviction suit Mon- Sday, but it was postponed until yesterday because court officers had been unable to serve a, sum- mons on McLain personally. McLain has been hiding since last Friday, when he appeared be- fore Baseball Commissioner Bowie Kuhn in New York to discuss what Kuhn referred to as "off the field activities" of McLain in 1967. McLain was reportedly seen hurriedly leaving the Federal Building in Detroit after his ap- pearance. James Ritchie head of a special U.S. Justice Department task force investigating organized crime, said this was McLain's first appearance before the grand jury. "We are cooperating fully with the baseball commissioner, and I consult with his office on a daily basis to discuss matters of mutual interest," Ritchie said. Fifteen persons have been ar- rested so far in a federal in- vestigation into nationwide igam- bling that Brickley has said would involve prominent sports figures. Charges of violating federal gam- bling laws have been dropped against three of the 15. Brickley said McLain "was very da-ily sports NIGHT EDITOR: ELLIOT LEGOW cooperative to Mr. Ritchie and to the grand jury in furnishing in- formation. "This is an independent inves- tigation Mr. Ritchie has been pur- suing for- some time," Brickley added. McLain's wife, who has return- ed to the family's Lakeland, Fla., home' without her husband, says the ace hurler "has done nothing to hurt baseball." Sharyn McLain, the daughter of Lou Boudreau, former star, short- stop for the Cleveland Indians and a baseball Hall of Famer, did not say where she had been or whether she had seen her husband. "Really, I can't say anything," she, said. The magazine Sports Illustrated published a copyright story yes- terday which said McLain was a partner in a bookmaking operation during the 1967 season. William R. Aikens, the pitcher's lawyer, left Detroit for New York Tuesday night with Kuhn report- edly preparing a statement for re- lease in the near future. A spokesman for the commis- sioners refused to say when the statement would be 'forthcoming. NEW YORK (A)-Cazzie Russell has so much enthusiasm it seems to have spilled over onto both ends of the basketball court. "He has the enthusiasm of Joe Frazier," said John Condon, the Madison Square Garden boxing publicity man, likening Russell to the heavyweight champion. "He comes off the bench all charged up . . . full of electricity." Unfortunately, most of Russell's enthusiasm during his first few years with the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Asso- ciation was bottled up on the of- fensive end of the court. But jazzie Cazzie, a Garden favorite ever since his All-Amer- ican days at Michigan, seems fi- nally to have divided all that energy between offense and de- fense and is really earning that $205,000 he got to sign with the Knicks those first three seasons. "I do things instinctively on of- fense," he said, "but I have to concentrate on both ends of the court. I think I play better de- fense. "I just didn't know what to do before. Now I understand. You have to really get into it .. put' your body into it. If I get five or six baskets and my man gets five or six, I haven't done a thing. If I get those baskets and the other guy 'doesn't, then that's significant. "I don't want the guys think- ing I'm only playing one end of the floor. My desire is to be a complete ballplayer, and when that day comes I'll probably run up and down Eighth Ave. scream- ing." Russell has been getting a chance the past two weeks, with Bill Bradley injured, to show how he has improved. He not only has done an adequate job on defense, Page Seven fensively he has scored 86 points in four games, in long jump shots like a machine gun. But Bradley is due to return any game now and Russell is sched- uled to return to the bench as chief fireman who can pump in a few quick baskets in an emer- gency. "I'll be glad to see him back," Russell said. "We can help each other. It was Bradley who won the starting job when Russell broke an ankle a year ago, and Russell hasn't been able to get it back, although even Br adley says "there's- no shot impossible for Russell." "Russell's just like a starter," said Coach Red Holzian. "It's just that we started going well when Bradley got into the line- up. We do well now when Cazzie's in there, too." -Associated Press DETROIT PITCHER DENNY McLAIN, who has been mysteriously missing since last Friday after a conference with Baseball Com- missioner Bowie Kuhn, reportedly testified yesterday before a grand jury investigation of gambling activities.
