THE MICHIGAN DAILY Tuesday, February 10, 1970 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Tuesday, February 10, 1970. w omen discuss abortions By TOVA KLEIN' Education, legislation and coun-' seling were the main areas dis- cussed during a Sunday night meting of women concerned about abortion and the problems of obtaining one. "Until women h a v e complete control over t h e i r own bodies, which includes control over de- ciding when they want children, they can't be free from oppres- sion," said Nancy Kohn, .who ad- dressed the, group of 50 women. The meeting then broke up into three committees to discuss edu- cation, legislation -and counseling about abortion. SThe legislation group talked about plans to get as many wo- mner as possible to testify at State Senate open hearings on. abortion law reform which are to, be- held in the Detroit area Feb. 27. The committee plans to hold a demonstration to allow other wo- men to express their views on the subject at the hearing. The group as a whole will discuss plansr-for" the demonstration at a meeting t~o be held next Sunday. -The committee is also consid- ering the possibility of running a petition drive, but the women have not yet agreed on what type of abortion reform legislation the petition should support.' The counseling committee 'will initially gather a group of women who have had abortions and allow these women to advise women seeking abortions on the best path to follow. The education group will con- centrate on self-education for about two weeks. They then plan to go out to the community to be- gin a widespread education effort about abortion. They' are also considering rais- ing money to aid women who want abortions and setting up a litera- ture table on the subject in the Fishbowl. While only 8,000 legal abortions are performed every year, it is es- timated that one million women a year have illegal abortions, said Barbara Rimmer, another speaker at the meeting. She added that the average le- gal abortion costs $750, while the average illegal one costs $500. [Daily Classifieds Bring, Results !
