The Wolverines, five-time los- ers in conference play, are not even in a position to play a spoilerrole, as they have only two games left with a contend- ing team, both with Minnesota. Michigan Coach John O r r sees Illinois as "the definite fav- orite" for the title. "Illinois has the most favorable schedule of the contenders," says Orr. "They got both Purdue and Iowa at home." The Illini, 5-0, were not over- whelming in beating Michigan 73-71 last January 17, and Orr admits that he was more im- M mmrm4- COUPON.---.... Iowa's schedule is working against them, however, since they play Illinois, Ohio State, and Pur- due away during the remainder of the season. In comparing the two favor- ites, Orr says, "Iowa has the better offensive ball team, but Illinois is stronger on defense." Judging the two teams by their performances against the Wolverines, Iowa definitely em- erges as the stronger They beat Michigan 109-99 way back on January 6 and seem to be get- ting stronger as the season pro- gresses. They have good height, aver- aging over 6-4, and as well- balanced a team as there is in the Big Ten. 6-7 forward John Johnson popped in 34 points against the Wolverines and guards Chad Calabria and Fred Brown both topped 20. Brown looked as smooth as any backcourt man Michigan has faced this year, as he mov- ed the ball well and was deadly from outcourt. Detroit's Ben McGilmer a n d skinnier-than-skinny Glenn Vid- novic, both veterans and depend- able scorers, round out the Hawkeye lineup. Illinois' performance against Michigan was in marked con- trast to Iowa's: husky center, Greg Jackson, threw in enough soft hooks to keep Michigan at bay, but the rest of the team just played along numbly, mak- ing turnover after turnover. Star guard, Mike Price was a special disappointment, getting in early foul trouble and then showing little except ai amazing dexterity in dribbling with only his left hand. Purdue has been the league's biggest disappointment but is still within striking distance of the leaders at 4-2, along w i t h Ohio State and Minnesota. The Boilermakers are a little thin on manpower this year but have the Big Ten's premier gunner-scorer in Rick Mount, averaging 41 points a game in the conference.\Mount destroyed Michigan last Saturday, by throwing in 53 points, and got a lot of help from teammates George Faerber and Bob Ford. But as Coach Orr says of Pur- .due, "They'll have to pull off an upset somewhere." The Boil- ermakers play Illinois and Ohio State away and get Iowa and Illinois against at home before the season's over. Ohio State and Minnesota rate outside changes at the Big Ten crown, although Orr s a y s Minnesota is "not even a con- tender." Minnesota has a killer schedule remaining, getting the three top contenders and Mich- igan away, but with high-scor- ing Ollie Shannon getting back in the groove, the Gophers could at least screw some of the other contenders. OSU has failed to jell t h 1 s year despite the presence of Jody Finney, Jim Cleamons and Dave Sorenson, but has a com- paratively easy schedule. They meet Purdue and Iowa at home before journeying to- Iowa on March 3. The Big Ten championship is likely to be decided on Febru- ary 17 when, Iowa and Illinois tangle, and February 21, when the two contenders play Ohio State and Purdue respectively. Another likelihood is that the Big Ten individual scoring mark of 57 by former Purdue ace Dave Schellhause will be shattered by Mount as he tries to shoot the Boilermakers into the champion- ship and the NCAA tournament. Whatever happens, of course, may have to be considered anti- climactic; the Wolverines h a v e struck out. :,;"::"::'e:ยข" 5 :L':?nti0'rt, "rn.v>"' ..K s,+p n,.oy sest , Ad-here will hold all sorts of objects... metal, wood, plastic, paper, display, projects ...only limited by your imagination.
