I THE MICHIGAN DAILY Thursday, January 22, 1970 ,. I ~1 phant'asmagorical undergraduate art exhibit KEEP AHEAD OF YOUR HAIR! A phantasmagoria of the lat- est materials and art styles com- prises the first undergraduate art show presently being held on thethird floor of the Rack- ham Bldg. Over 200 pieces of work re- main from -the preliminary judging of 527 pieces. John Hartom, co-chairman of a r t for the Creative Arts Festival, calls the exhibit an "incredibly diverse group." It varies from polyurthane foam fingers that jut from the walls and floor throughout the three exhibit rooms to paintings both in acry- .lic and oil. Grass grows in a tinted glass box and stripes vacuum clean- er rests on the floor symboliz- ing J. Edgar Hoover's c r i m e clean-up campaign. The works in the show utilize almost every material presently available in- cluding metals, beads, electric lights and polyester resin. But the creations vary in their conception spanning both ab- stract and naturalistic ideas and finally touching upon social commentary. Edwina Busch received a first place cash award of $100 for her two works in macrame, the art of knotting, and o n e small ceramic pot containing several carefully executed etch- ings on paper circles. A startling canvas in g r e y permeated by a brown V-form by Louis Sadler and a work of metal sprayed in fuzzy, g r e y felt by Douglas Hollis placed second, each receiving $50. Hartom believes students do create "quality stuff", however, he adds, no one ever gets a chance to see it. Students now have a chance to exhibit and possibly sell their works, Hartom explains. The $300 cash prizes were donated by the art school through the Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ulrich Awards Fund with an ad- ditional $50 in merchandise from Ulrich's.
